O/T Twitter spat

O/T Twitter spat

Epic Twitter spat between Gary Neville, owner of Salford City, and Andy Holt, Chairman and Owner of Accrington Stanley.

Salford have signed Adam Rooney from Aberdeen on a 3 year contract worth at least £4,000 a week (his salary at Aberdeen allegedly) to play in the Conference. Holt isn’t happy. A reflection of modern football.

A classic thread this on Twitter and worth reading.

Last night, Neville was saying he hoped that his Salford side would replace Accrington in the Football League.

Can't help but think it'll go tits up at Salford City like it very (very....) nearly did do at FC United of Manchester.

Looking like a Colne Dynamoes situation

Very tough division especially with the likes of Orient, Wrexham, Barnet and Chesterfield in it

Wonder whatever happened to Graham "Chalky" White ??

The newly re-formed Colne still play at Holt House.

Remember going there on New Years Day 1990 and we got beat 1-3.

Stuart Connerton scored our goal, a few years before he was playing for Phoenix Celtic in the North Lancs League against Nomads. And we beat them!!

Getting a bit heated and it's even made the BBC News Headlines.....

Neville sounds like a real asshole.

Let the children play. I think Accy will struggle in league 1 on that budget even with Coley in charge. Could be a repeat of his Rochdale fiasco all over again. Can't see Holt being prepared to see his club return to EFL2. Could be a similar situation as what happened at Fleetwood regarding managers. However hope that they do survive.

I think the argument is more to do with the ridiculous amounts of money Neville and his cronies are throwing at Salford City.

Trying to buy success. Good luck to Graham Alexander there. Can't see them being patient if they don't get off to a good start.

Even some of the more longer supporting Salford fans are a bit sceptical about the rapid progress they have made after years of bumbling around in the North West Counties League.

When you've got a number of multi millionaires collectively owning a club, they will throw interest earned on their money at the project and IF it works out then good luck to them. I wonder what our reaction would be if they had bought our club and thrown their own money at it?

I think that's missing the point. Holt is arguing well that "gamblers" who throw money at a club to acieve more or over achieve are making the whole set-up unsustainable. He's not necessarily having a go at those who do, just the system that allows it.

I think the stuff about club budgets and the very likely range of final positions in various leagues is really interesting. Man Utd with the biggest budget would be a success if they finished first - sixth, in the premier league and it's a disaster. The same or the converse applies to low budgets too. If we, Morecambe, had the lowest budget in league 2 last year and weren't last or bottom then that's a relative and real success, particularly if that "success" is sustained over seasons.

Tough shit! Andy Holt can spend his money the way he wants, as can Neville and co.
When Jack Walker decided to Bank roll his beloved 'Rovers' it was for the good of the town and the good folk within, not for personal gain like some.
Andy Holt should remain focused on what he has to do instead of worrying about Ex Premiership players that could buy and sell him 5 times over

Wow. I think that so misunderstands the actual people involved.

At Rochdale, they had tons of success under Keith Hill, who rather than stay, took another job. On a small budget, he had Dale in the automatic promotion places but then lost 8 games in 10 to leave them mid-table. I think if they’d stuck with Coley they would have stayed up comfortably but they replaced him and got relegated. So not a fiasco just a standard story of modern football.

And that’s what makes your second point even more ridiculous. The whole point of the Twitter spat was that Holt hadn’t pumped millions into the team and knows they’ve overachieved. He’s also not gambling to stay up in League 1 and is doing it on a sustainable basis. He knows that like Stevenage and Daggers, who also over-achieved, they’re favourites to go back down. So to say he’ll sack Coley and think he’s Andy Pilley completely misunderstands the situation.

If Neville, Scholes & co had come to Morecambe with their money, I wouldn't have complained! I bet it's only the pseudo-Scousers who don't like Neville & co! Posh... other than Morecambe, who do/did you support?

It is nothing new. Would we have got to League Footy if PMG hadn't turned up and started chucking money at us? Rushden, Fleetwood and FGR all got league footy on the back of a money man. Eastleigh and Billericay have chucked loads of money at their projects. My point is, it is nothing new and I scarily agree with Keith. The class of 92 are only joint partners in Salford, they match the money put in by Peter Lim. Just waiting for Jurgen Klopp to wade in with his we do things differently here comments.

clubs trying to buy success nothing new, i can see Gary Nevilles point if view, he's been attacked off somebody who he doesnt even know.

if our new owners made an exception with a one off deal paying that sort of money for a striker capable of shooting us into L1, we wouldnt moan.

I really want Accy to do fantastic and they will but the argument here is about how others spend their money, regardless of who they are or have been and it's got sod all to do with Andy Holt how anyone on the planet spends their's
