That’s got nothing to do with it.

I disagreed with Brooks Mileson at Gretna; Carl Williams at Hornchurch; Max Griggs at Ru$hden £ Diamonds; Graham White at Colne Dynamoes and George Reynolds at Darlington, as well as many others who ended up abandoning their long-term plan and the club being liquidated. If they spend £3 million say over four seasons and Salford don’t go up, they’ll cutback and then wimp out.

Oldhamade says they can do what they want with their money. But to me it’s just cheating. Salford can’t afford Adam Rooney but Gary Neville can, that to me means honest clubs working hard for their success suffer. Even free market capitalist USA understands this and the NFL draft and other measures attempts to make a level paying field for all.
That’s got nothing to do with it.

Phew! I thought I wasn't going to get a bite! :D

If PMG had gone to Giant Axe instead of Christie Park, which team would have been in the Football League now and which team would have been playing in front of 250 people and a dog? How many football clubs are actually playing within their means? If Neville & co get board and bugger off, as long as the club doesn't fold, it will still be in a better position than when they first arrived, even if only in terms of infrastructure and the pie lady getting a new oven. And the fans will have enjoyed the ride.

I'd have been happy to have them come and invest in Morecambe. Or any rich ex-Liverpool players for that matter.

Wasn't that something he was on the verge of doing before (Jeff Udall ??) spoke to him about Morecambe?

Nearly every team throughout the Premiership, Championship and the EFL has to rely on a greater extent to the financial muscle of either an individual or groups of individuals. The likes of Chelsea, Man City and Man Utd to name but a few would be unable to bring on board overseas talent to grace our home based game. The downside for me is that in itself is having a detrimental effect on the development of home based talent, but it is what it is and fans can do little to alter that fact. I've got no problem if AFC Salford gain EFL status on the backs of the former Man Utd players. Just wish it had been our club that had benefited from it, BUT maybe our new owners with their financial input will deliver some on the field and off the field success. As for the Accy Chairman's comments, it would appear that the Accy fans are not too happy with his comments as he appears to have forgotten that a certain Mr Whalley bank rolled their club and gained EFL status as a result. However there will remain a dislike if not loathing by many to those who choose to spend their cash how they want.

I wouldn't mind but all this fuss over them signing Adam Rooney, who was complete shite at Oldham
Did OK at Swindon beforehand and latterly at Aberdeen but there's far better for less

I wondered when someone would bring up PMG. How do we know that the success achieved by the club was down to PMG’s money and not by the likes of Jim Harvey? How do we know whether we’d have made the Football League irrespective of his cash? PMG didn’t invest at 250 people and a dog level, he started when we were in the Conference and had started to build a fan base.

I know in the Isle of Man you like to pay no tax but expect everything for free but the world simply doesn’t work like that and the fundamental principle should be fairness.

Do you remember Justin Jackson? No way that Jim Harvey would have signed Justin without Peter McGuigan (& UMBRO). We don't KNOW what would have happened without his cash, because we can't possibly know. But we can have a good guess.

I wish I didn't pay any tax, sadly I'm not in that wealth bracket and you are probably aware that we pay VAT at the same rate as that adjacent island? But good try!

I like the principle of fairness too, but to quote you back, "the world simply doesn’t work like that" Quite right sir, quite right.

At the time we re-signed Jacko, PMG wasn’t at Umbro. I don’t remember huge sums being involved £30k (?) after selling him to Woking for more just two years earlier.

I know PMG made some money while at Reebok and Pentland but, as far as I understand, the serious cash came in 2004 when Umbro floated on the stock exchange. This coincided with when we signed Michael Twiss and a few other players.

I appreciate that the investment in the squad, while not of Salford proportions, was outside what we could afford. However, at the time, I thought we had a much bigger board who contributed collectively and for the benefit of the community, not just for players but for assets like the North Stand. A lot of what we’ve lost has been because we moved to one man’s plaything.

Didn't Umbro contribute to Jacko's wages with a boot deal? I remember seeing pics of Jacko, Shearer and Owen in Match Magazine at the Speciali launch.

Exactly. I couldn’t remember who the two star players were, but knew it was a bit incongruous, two internationals and Justin. That was Peter’s doing and meant we could afford a player who was well outside our normal wage range.

I almost posted something similar in the ‘squad’ thread regarding a ‘midfield general’ to shout & boss the middle, but in the spirit of the current entente cordiale I’d avoid mentioning it and focus on pocking Posh with a stick instead! :D Three agreements already? That’s the entire allocation for 2018/19 season!

Fairly sure Danny Carlton had one of these boot deals at some point too.

i was told a bit ago that Mark Dixon was once a Salesman for Umbro(who sponsored Man United) and thats how he got to know Gary Neville and some of the other United lads, Hence the Salford City connection and move as Mark was already on good terms.

I was told that whilst Dixon was at Pony(strange how he turned up wherever PMG did)he played for a local sunday side. When a lad forgot his boots, he nipped to his car and got him a pair meant for Nicky Summerbee.

Gary Neville's thoughts on the reasoning behind their investment.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NierSKE9s-U

For me they can do with their money what they want and he makes the valid point about their money being put back into the game that made them all wealthy.

From what I can gather from a Salford source is Neville and co are putting very little money into the club they are just the face of the club .
