100 years ago today......................

Postby cyprus-shrimp » Wed Oct 03, 2018 5:36 pm

................. my dear old Dad was born. I can already see SVers saying this should be O/T, but my brother (in the UK) and myself (in Cyprus) have been chatting about things today and remembering about all the matches at CP and elsewhere that Dad took us to over the years. He worked at Bannister Bates solicitors in Morecambe and was a great supporter of MFC. Hardly ever missed a home game (with my brother and myself alongside), and lots of away trips (Lancs Combination days) to Netherfield (Kendal Town for you youngsters), Chorley, Horwich RMI, Rossendale Utd., Nelson, South Liverpool, Ashton Utd, Burscough etc etc...... and of course the Boxing Day specials against The Dolly Blues at both CP and the Big Chopper. We both obviously also remembered the FA Cup 3rd round at CP against Weymouth.

So ..... thanks Dad for introducing us to MFC, instilling a life-long support of the club and so many good memories. And I'm definitely not making this O/T. ;) ;)

Things at MFC have moved on a long way since then - some good, some not so good. And as for those "rattles" that we used to take to all the matches, I guess they would be taken off us as being offensive weapons these days!!! But I still have mine tucked away - made of wood and painted red and white (what other colour could it ever be). Good memories. Thanks Dad. Thanks Morecambe FC.

That’s a great tribute. Simpler and happy times.

Wonder what he’d make of social media and the internet?

Thanks for the positive comments - and to Posh: Dad would have absolutely hated social media etc I can assure you. I can still remember getting told off because my handwriting was so poor that people would never be able to read my letters!!! His handwriting was always immaculate (almost copper plate!).

It makes it sound like that song that says something along the lines of one day you will look back and say those really were the good old days. With what's going on at the club with PMG and the resignation of 2 respected eminent directors nobody is going to look back at the current period with much affection.

We had dealings with Bannister Bates for years and years, I remember David Smith from ages ago. Here is an old letter head ;)

Wonder if cyprus-shrimp recalls the ship claxon that used to part of the match day experience at the old Lancaster road stand at CP during the early 60's and was used as part of the match day atmosphere long since departed :?: :?: :?:

I think it was donated by one of the Baxter family and certainly created one hell of a racket but despite the noise never once did other fans in the stand complain about it, can't comment if opposition goalkeepers found it a bit off putting though

Remember also he sweet shop in the old stand that an elderly lady used to run on match days :?: :?: :?:

Also the ' give us an M...M give us an O..O' chant etc :?: :?: :?:

Memories eh.. :!: :!:

Marky - Sir Alfred Bates owned a lovely cottage on the shores of Lake Windermere. Very kindly he offered it to me for my honeymoon and my wife and myself spent a wonderful week there.

And Red Robo (C C or whatever name you prefer :D ), I share all of those memories with you. As well as my brother and my Dad, most match days we also had Steve Mashiter alongside us (another no longer with us).

This is like my mother, who phones me to tell me that she sent an email! Talking of which, why not just PM each other with your email addresses?
