Non league grounds

Halifax seems to be a favourite of some on the OneFootball forum - I don't remember it being that special.

Which grounds stand out for folk here?

(I remember Clitheroe very fondly in the Lancs Junoir cup for it's choice of 2 gravies and a vase of flowers in the ladies toilets and it's old fashioned turnstile entrance) (I am a sentimentalist)

Probably my favourite away ground in the Northern Premier League was Buxton.

Nice little ground was The Silverlands and they sold THE best burgers ANYWHERE.

Tea was served in China cups and saucers too...!!!

Horwich for the hot pot, delicious and much missed, not the slope though.
Welling for the hot dogs, in half French stick with American mustard, and the terrace on the side which leant backwards. Behind the goal the terrace was at the same height as the top deck of the bus, which stopped outside the ground, with passengers asking what the score was through the windows.

Sausages, bacon, eggs, chips, beans, pot of tea, all for 3 quid at Brigg Town.Cowboy???
Bishop Aucklands clubhouse, two hundred at the game, four hundred in the bar, ridiculously packed as it was ridiculously cheap.
Witton Albion, Central Avenue, cinder bank behind the goal, reminded me of Crusty Pie.
Harrogate Railway, name a sea Fish?

Been to the Shay to watch Halifax V Rochdale (a derby of sorts) many years ago to watch relative who played for Halifax (in between spells playing for Morecambe!) although it has been largely redeveloped since then.

Favourite non-league grounds of mine include:

Christie Park, Morecambe. More from the memories watching Morecambe occasionally in the late 90's.
Grundy Hill, Horwich RMI.
Hiton Park, Leigh RMI.
Nene Park, Rushden and Diamonds. It was unrivalled in the early 00's.

I went to North Shields, and remember the mushy chips in a brown bag, as well as the meat slice!! We lost 4-1, Bobby Grimshaw scored our goal after 4 minutes, the minibus was late, of the 15 passengers only I saw the goal, dare I say, happy days!!!

I only sampled it once (on the strength of recommendations from my fellow fans) had one mouth full, and promptly launched it over the wall..... yuk....... perhaps I had mine on an off day.

The team had an off day as we got dumped out of the FA Cup in a replay losing 0-3 in 1990....

Does anyone remember South Bank. FA Cup match and we drew 4-4 there and lost the replay at home. Morecambe then had a fairly shite team although Les Rigby I think it was at the time did his best on a shoestring to sign players , we had new players every week.

I remember Shildon, but not South Bank.

Shildon......... another ground we got to on the stroke of Half Time.

FA Trophy, 1990/91 season.

Left Christie Park in good time but the coach driver decided to go up to Carlisle on the M6, across to Newcastle, and then back down the A1 to get to Shildon.

Talk about going round the houses.

Many irate passengers that day.

Always enjoyed Woking. We had a great relationship with their fans and were always welcome in the bar. Best time in there was passing the cup around for a drink after we'd won the Spalding Cup.

Marine on New Years Day when we conga'd around three sides of the pitch and never stopped singing, even when Marine scored!

For my sins, I always enjoyed my trips to Holker Street, Barrow.

Was always a fantastic atmosphere, and I only ever saw us lose once there - the 1988/89 season and we got beat 1-3 in the Northern Premier League. That coming after a 1-5 thrashing there in an FA Cup replay a few weeks prior to that.

Memorable trips that stand out were the 1993/94 season and a Tuesday night trip. Score is 1-1 with seconds to play of injury time. Corner comes inswinging from Morecambe, up pops Ollie Parillon who must have jumped about 8 foot in the air to head home our winner. Cue absolute f***ing delirium from the Morecambe fans in the (then covered with a roof) Holker End

Then the following season (1994/95) we went there on Boxing Day and on an absolute quagmire of a pitch we won 1-0 in monsoon conditions which was another 3 points on our march towards the Conference.

My first ever visit there was a 0-0 draw on Boxing Day 1987 and a crowd of 2,300 made an unreal, hostile atmosphere towards us 40 or so Shrimps fans.......

Not my favourite ground but a memorable Saturday afternoon at Matlock Town's Causeway Lane around 1993. The beach party complete with our BBQ on the terraces (grass banking) and a kick about after the proper match had finished. Happy days!

Remember Causeway Lane with fond affection too Rod. Aged about 14, it was the only away game my Dad and I ever went to !
I asked him about 9-30 in the morning if we could go to Matlock that afternoon
"Where-lock ? Why ?" he replied
" Because Morecambe are playing - and then I've got to be at Chesterfield's ground Saltergate for 5-15 to swap Morecambe programmes with a guy called George. He's got a pie and a cup of tea waiting !"
" You really are mad Stephen, ar'nt you ? I don't even go to Christie Park that much "
" Well I've actually thought of that ! You could drive and visit the historic Heights of Abraham which overlook Matlocks ground - they are very interesting apparently "
" Hmmm, ok then "
So we did ! Great memories, great pies, lots of new programmes for the new Red Shrimp programme shop - and we won 2-0

Remember that day well, such a shame that days like that are not part of the EFL experience. Maybe it's something that we could do or something similar for our own fans to improve the match day experience.

Accy have done a lot to improve their match day experience but nothing we couldn't do ourselves.

Hi Rod, perhaps worth considering arranging pre-season friendlies with some of these clubs so that you oldies can revisit memorable old haunts whilst we newbies can have something to relate to and enjoy?
