Litter picking after home games

Litter picking after home games

Postby Shrimp Girl » Tue Jan 01, 2019 11:44 pm

I'm one of the regular litter pickers after the home games, following an appeal by Shrimps Trust on Facebook at the start of the season. Not speaking on behalf of Shrimps Trust here, it's just me saying this.
Attendance today was 3.749. That's nearly three times our usual number and unsurprisingly, there was nearly three times the usual amount of litter to pick up.
There were four of us today, picking up 3,749 people's litter. There are more pickers as a rule (seven or eight on average) but it would be great if a few more could join in on the busy days like this. I know not everyone can stay behind afterwards and this isn't a moan, it's just me pointing out a need that's easily fixed, by fans, for no money, right away. You just go to the Berlin Wall/home terrace corner at the end of the game, someone will give you a bin bag and away you go. There are occasional perks - today I collected 6p, a programme from last week, a lost season ticket (handed in to JBs bar, stand E seat P166 if you're missing it) and a lovely pair of CUFC woolly gloves which were great for picking up sticky sweet wrappers.
I know people ought to be bagging their own litter and I understand the Trust have raised the issue with Rod, looking into placing more bins around the ground and maybe also recycling bins for the plastic bottles. But in the meantime it's helpers that are needed. , so if you can spare a few minutes after the busy games especially, you'd be welcomed with open arms (and a bin bag).
Cheers!

Great work from the volunteers! Hope you get more people joining you.

So how did that work out then?

Jim from Shrimps Trust has copied this to Facebook and there will be a scout group helping on Saturday. They have done it before, I think it was one of their kids asked Jim Bentley where he kept the bin bags :D

You volunteers do a brilliant job. I think you have done the right thing raising the issue on here, and hence the FB page. Even if it doesn’t result in more people volunteering, at least it will hopefully make fans think more about their own actions with regard litter. Keep up the good work.

Just curious, how long do we normally spend on this. I may be able to help on Saturday.

It's usually all done by 5.30 at most. But if you can only do ten minutes it still helps.

Shrimp Girl... Myself and my children have helped before but my Scout Group haven’t as we live in Preston....I think I’d be rather embarrassed if any of them asked Jim for bin bags!!
I need to educate them in Morecambe legends quickly lol
