Hi sorry can’t understant releasing funds for a goal scorer. We had one but he was not given a chance for whatever reason. Just hope not selling the silver.

if we get a proven goal scorer then it will be a good bit of business however did Jason get a good run in the team and prove his worth?
Oliver has scored 4 in all games including cup and Jason 2 goals but less games played.

we can wait and see but felt he had something to offer at our club, given the chance.

lets hope to some good signings this week

Transfer window not been open long and so we've sent back a forward, released a forward, and sold a forward! The good news is we've signed a defender!!! :? :?

Can't say I'm surprised at this action. He simply wasn't given enough game time to prove that the close season wasn't wasted chasing him to get him on a 2 year contract.

I just hope for his sake that he proves our management team wrong and that he doesn't come back to haunt us next season, whatever league we find ourself in.

I think it's criminal that he wasn't given a chance and yet Oliver has had more chances than some have had meals elsewhere.

I can't imagine that the fee will be much and assuming that the money is put towards getting a new striker on board then our management team will surely have to live or die by results this season. This puts them under even more pressure as the new owners have said that it's a result based business and failure to deliver will have it's own result.

Best of luck Jason just hope you deliver at the goods at Wrexham.

Oswell & Oliver play together, two up front.
Oliver scores & gets MotM.
Both ran Cambridge defence ragged.

They never play together again.

Jim Bentley
“As well as doing right by Jason the transfer fee and the money released in wages will help us in our efforts to rebuild our squad in this January window in order to improve all areas.

“We have several targets in that area with one expected to be announced early next week. We have to do all we can to spend the budget we have as well as possible and I expect there to be more movement in the next few weeks.''
think thats fair enough.

Its like getting 2 players for Oswell.

AJ Smith is our best forward anyway, its about getting somebody to play alongside him. Imo.

Does it matter who comes in Messi could come in but be would be benched for Oliver. Whoever the replacement is will only be backup for Oliver and come the e d of the season it is going to cost us dearly.

A pity we don't offer Oliver up on a free transfer (or a we will give you money). Oswell didn't get a chance while Oliver misses most of his! Just have to hope A-Jay's injury isn't too serious as he's our best striker.

Can I be the voice of (polite) dissent here? OK, I admit we didn't see much of Oswell, but for me he looked a little lightweight, easily bullied off the ball (though not as much as Oates, who is not a striker). Wish him the best of luck, but for me our best strike pairing has looked like A-Jay & Oliver, the latter far better played alongside another striker than on his own.

The best striking pairing with 9 goals between them this season. LOL

Would be even better if Oliver was able to be more directional with those headers that he wins. It's OK being able to win the aerial battles but if the end product leaves a striking partner (assuming that he has one alongside him) without a clue as where the header will land then such a partnership will not provide the required goal tally to be classed as a successful partnership.

A few points on that:

1. 9 goals is almost a third of those scored;
2. Just because I think it's the best partnership, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a good partnership;
3. Good strikers still need good service; if they're not getting it, they won't score.

Hi Phil
Thanks for agreeing with me and confirming my point. One third of a poor total. 10 players in the league have scored more than our striking pair on their own with 2 scoring almost double the total and a further 6 players on one behind.
It’s a bad do when the best partnership is not a good pairing so the best is not good enough which the management team seem to suffer from myopia in this respect
I agree that strikers need service but they should create opportunity themselves which lets be honest Mr Oliver is not great at. look at the stats in a career spanning from 2010 at Sheffield with total appearances of 229 (if maths ok ) with 41 goals with a vast majority of these non league though the standard of football in my opinion is just as good.
Something needs to change. In my opinion it’s the manager and before the no one is better than Jim brigade pipe up. It’s not all about who is the best it’s about attitude. Look at Man U. Mourinho could not buy a win and look at things now. Few would say that solskjaer is a more capable manager but is getting the results. A change is as good as a rest as the status quo is not working

Personally I think that any manager who wants to progress to a higher level has to have success at his present club. Nearly 10 seasons under Jim and Co and we haven't really progressed that would probably entice any other club to take them on, other than a club with limited resources like ourselves who would probably take a gamble and appoint him.

Jim is rightly ambitious but as sad as it is both parties in this relationship need to progress and that may require a parting of the ways for both the club and the management team in the not too distant future.

I really would like to see the partnership progress together but I just can't see it....and that genuinely makes me sad.

Just going back to the thread title..... I have a horrible feeling that we will regret 'selling' Oswell in the same way the we (and we must include the management surely :?: )regret releasing Podge. Does anyone on here not regret letting Podge go :?: :?: :?: :?:

Different kettle of fish.

Amond was actually scoring goals for us, all be it from out wide on the right, also Accrington Stanley his previous club he still managed to score past double figures out of position there too.

So basicaly proved he could score goals at L2.

With hindsight, obviously it was a mistake. But at the time, we had Jack Redshaw keeping Podge out of his preferred position. How many on here wanted Amond in, instead of Redshaw? If we'd known Blackpool would come in for Jack, then we'd have kept Podge. Instead, we lost both. I always rated Podge and was upset when he left, but we couldn't afford to keep both.

As for the 'not progressing' comments once again, personally, I think it is better to tread water than drowning. Yes, we've been treading water for the last few seasons. The 'pro-Jim' brigade believe that without him, we'd have gone under. How many other Football League managers have had to put up with the crap he has? Players & staff not being paid on numerous occasions, best players being forced out at the end of their contracts even though both Jim & the players wanted to stay, but 'directors' making decisions that led to them leaving? Top players being sold for far less than they were worth, simply because we were so desperate for cash? Not knowing who owned the club? A crazy Italian? A bullshitting Brazilian? A weird set up from Newcastle? A student from Middle East? Or Peter McGuigan?

We've been a skint, screwed up, soap-opera of a club, lurching from crisis to crisis, teetering on the edge of bankruptcy for years. Yet a manager, who has been creating a silk purse out of a sow's ear season after season, is expected to do even more by some fans? That is what's difficult to fathom for some of us.

Also, we released Podge to make room in the budget to sign Barkhuizen. I don’t think any sane person would have chosen Podge over Barkhuizen.

Just goes to show that if you get decent crowds then you can afford a bag full of new players.

Whilst us with little money have to settle for loans or those that other clubs don't want ie scrap heap....unless they want to stay in the EFL but money talks and the majority would drop down to the National for a few dollars more...and who can blame them.

Best of luck Jimbo ( and the owners) in your efforts to bring in new blood.

:?: :?: :?:

Wouldn't be surprised if a Stockton and Oswell partnership works wonders. Just a pity that our manager wouldn't go with Oliver and Oswell one. Shows for me the difference in the way Managers think about their offensive partnerships.
