Do you know what the deal is?
What if it is something like this (and I'm guessing, I have no 'insider knowledge')...
Jim has told Alex, 'we'd like to keep you, but your role will be very much as a back-up player, so the new contract we're offering you is half last seasons. We know that's a big cut, so if you can find something better, then you leave with our best wishes. If not, you've got that in your pocket to fall back on'.
Alex has then taken some time to see if he can get fixed up. He's not central to Jim's plans, so no pressure. If he re-signs, he'll be on the bench, making appearances when the injuries start and occasionally trying to shore up the defence occasionally. Fair on him, fair on us?
As he is training with the squad, it is obviously not a 'fallen out' situation, so let's just see what happens.

You could wrong Keith, but I think what you say makes a lot of sense.
I personally don't see Kenyon making an impact on the 1st 11. However, it sounds like Jim, reading between the lines of his interview, set him some fitness goals over the break and he's come back in great shape. Perhaps the conversation has been as you said, but it's also conditional on "you coming back in certain condition"..
You can't fault his passion for the club so from that respect good luck to him.
