O/T No texting at games!

Postby BerlinWaller » Sat Aug 10, 2019 9:26 pm

I have just pinched this from Twitter. Basically, a Hull fan was threatened with expulsion from the game today for txting during play. He was told that his texts could influence the in play betting markets.

This is more common than you may think. Usually it's Far East betting syndicates who use people at games to relay fast time match information to them from mobiles so that they can place large bets on line before the bookies can react to an event in a game.

At the Morecambe v Oldham game last season I saw a couple of guys I've known from the past who aren't from the Morecambe area. On chatting it turns out they are employed by the bookmakers to detect people engaged in such activities. They were specifically looking for members of a team based in the Preston area who attend games on behalf of the betting syndicates. They are also looking for folk who are on their mobiles all game because that's how the system operates, it's a race against the clock to place the bet before the bookies can change the odds.

In the context of the above you can understand why this guy permanently on his mobile would come to their attention.

There was a program i caught a few minutes of on BBC1 the other night How to beat the bookies i think, and the gambler was trying to win on a live tennis match somewhere abroad. He was being txted the score and then trying to bet but wasn't realy quick enough!Transpired he was a Grimsby fan! He had an accumulater with us playing Grimsby last season, had we won he would've won a couple of thousand pounds on cash-out. Shame they equalised very late in the game! :D
Don't worry be happy!

I remember cashing out against Lincoln when they equalised against us couple of seasons ago. Managed to get in there before the app went 1-1
The bookies can be safe in the knowledge that was about the only bet I won all season.

""On initial review of this particular incident all procedures and protocols were followed."

Appalling. Is our club letting in these people to snoop on our phone use during the game?

Well it does say it is authorised by there football league and it's clubs so presumably they are. I can see the need for it but I think the word is 'tactfully'.

It's often forgotten that the ground is private property and what you can & can't do while in the ground is covered by club & league rules. By entering you are agreeing to their conditions. Accepting league rules is part & parcel of the club being in the league. If they choose to monitor phone use in this manner, you've agreed to it.

Yeah yeah, doesn’t make it right. I’m not sure it’s made clear when you buy a ticket or are entering the ground that you could be thrown out for legitimate use of your own phone.
I’d be interested to see the said rules covering this, entitlement to refund etc.

Of course people who don’t attend games needn’t worry.

Nah, I’ll just check the sign with the ground rules when I’m going in next time.

If you are using your phone legitimately there is no way you could be thrown out of the ground. You may be subject to questioning if people suspect you are using your phone to inform Far East betting syndicates of the score for example but if you're behaving yourself then you'll have no problems.

Subjected to questioning? And that’s OK?

Fair enough.

Funnily enough, a similar thing almost happened to me 2 or 3 seasons ago.

I was a ST holder in C Prem and the stewards approached me at half time during a match. They asked if I was with the person sat next to me as they had caught him using his phone during the game "we've got him doing live betting". As far as I could tell, this chap was with his son and checking the other football scores on BBC sport!
Hello! Hello! We are the Morecambe boys!

It's a minimum of 30 seconds behind play, often a minute. Sometimes the score will flash up on TV before the iFollow shows it.
