Mark Halstead

Mark Halstead

I would like to see Mark start on Sat. His performance last year away at Vale was MAGNIFICENT. It might just subconsciously get into the Vale players heads, if they see him in goal :?: Their fans certainly won’t forget it  We need every little bit of advantage possible.
Anyone else?

I'd have Mark starting ahead of Baz anyway, so I'm with you.

I'm still a big fan of Baz, but now think that age is catching up with him. He doesn't look as agile or as commanding as he once did, and there is obviously a reason why the players made Mark their player of the year last season.
So for the first time, for the greater good, I too think that Mark should now be given a run as number one.

Ok, i'll have a nibble

Mark is the better keeper and should be number 1 IMO. If he isn't going to be more than a number 2 he should be loaned out in Jan and free up a wage with a young loanee coming in to warm the bench.

Id start with Mark, i think Barry's age is catching up with him, and his weight wont help his agility.

I don't think there is anything between them in terms of ability.

Barry has the experience and captaincy.
Mark has youth (relatively!) and a longer future in the game.

Personally, I'd go with Mark on the basis that Barry hasn't got much longer left, so I'd prefer to see Mark getting that experience and nailing down the Number 1 spot for himself. But I can understand why it is still Barry's for the time being.

Mark No.1 for me. He did really well when he came into the first team last season, and was a key player in us staying-up. I know it's Baz's testimonial year, and well deserved for his loyalty and service, but I'd like to see Mark get established as our No.1 now.

Baz seems to loose sight of the ball when shot from outside the box. The number of goals from outside the box is worrying. Surely our management team can see it..... :?: :?: :?:

Even in the few games I've seen I have noticed this but is it partly because our method of falling back congests the box and leaves the goalie unsighted :?: Just a thought!

Long shots and dominating his area are his biggest flaws now. He was much quicker with his distribution against Northampton which was good to see.

With regards the long shots, he is so flat footed. He struggles picking the shot up and then moving his feet to get in a position to save the ball. His reflexes are as good as ever though.

It's a toss up really as I think they can both be excellent but at the same time both can make errors. I didn't think Mark Halstead was that solid against Wolves and was lucky a mis-punch went behind for a corner. Though, as Barry Roche is the Captain and so obviously has the confidence of the outfield, I think he should remain number 1 choice for now.

For me a goalkeeper should never be Captain; it should be someone who can direct play from the centre of the park.

Chuffin' 'eck Neil, I'm in complete agreement with you. BTW why have we only got 10 players today (you posted the team, and I counted twice; you forgot Tanner).

Hugo Lorris and Dino Zoff have both captained their countries to world cup wins, along with a few others.

I think Mark will go out on loan in the New Year. Clearly can't break into the first team, and with him living near Wrexham ( I think ), I reckon he will want a game somewhere that needs him, and a bit closer to home. potentially our loss, but Baz ain't slowing up just yet.

Having just seen the highlights from yesterday, I think Baz is culpable for the 2nd and 3rd goals. The 2nd seemed to fly over his shoulder from distance with zero reactions from Baz. The 3rd is a deep floaty cross to the back post which Baz made no attempt to get to and then Pope knocks a soft header past him in to the far corner. Remember, Mark was dropped after one bad performance after numerous good ones whilst Baz was injured.

Kind of agree with this.

1st goal" Barry could of at least stretched his right hand out, didnt really have to move his feet
2nd goal" hard to see from that angle, maybe a more agile Halstead?
3rd goal" unlucky

Think it's time that Mark was recalled from his wilderness. Barry hasn't done much wrong, apart from getting older, but the side needs a shake up, starting with the keeper.

Baz is one of very few players who are in the team on merit this season.

Probably MotM yesterday, two saves in particular that were top drawer. Kenyon also played well. Kev probably covered more miles than anyone else on the pitch, attacking & defending.
