2020!

HAPPY CENTENARY YEAR!!!

Morecambe FC are 100 years old this year. Formed on 7th May 1920. Obviously, we have the current, precarious position to pull away from, but if we get through this season without going down, we will never have been relegated in those 100 years.

We've had some tough times, where it looked like we could fold, most notably the early to mid 1980's where we were so desperate, Ken Ormerod as club secretary, had to raid the fruit machine in the bar in order to pay players' wages. Ken would then be back the following day to wash the kit. Ken practically dragged the club through those dark days single handedly at times! Every Morecambe Fan should know Ken's name, just as much as current Morecambe legends like Rod Taylor.

Then of course, our recent ownership debacles, with Brazilian & Italian crazy men or con-men depending upon point of view, as well as a Kuwaiti (who from what I can gather was honourable) offering us an international flavour to our near demise!

We may not be out of the woods yet, but we're hopefully levelled off and can start to look forwards. Hopefully our future as a Football League team will be based upon our own merit on the pitch and not due to other clubs suffering misfortune off it.

One last game of 2019 then start celebrations for 2020!

Oh... and happy New Year to you lot too! :D :D :D

I was mentioning it because the centenary year is almost upon us! I'm guessing the club will be promoting this? Possibly some merchandise? Something that the fans can come together and unite over as a celebration? It's been a bit low key so far and barely mentioned...

I like that “stat” about when we reach 100yrs old, that there’s only us and Boca Juniors in Argentina who’ve never been relegated(fingers crossed) :ugeek:

Cheers K for the post.
Andy, brilliant that. Us, and a “top” Argentinian team, enough said.

Wow. Never heard this before but I love it. So, it's "out of teams that have been in existence for over 100 years"? Hope it's not tempting fate!

I thought there was another non-relegated side? Inter Milan or Real Madrid? In my vague memory, we would make it as 'number three' in the world, but I may be wrong. Regardless, if we stay up, we join a very small group of 'never relegated, 100 year old+' teams. 8-) :P :P :P

Actually... it looks like there are a few centenary+ sides that haven't been relegated. Glasgow Celtic, Cliftonville & Linfield make it three in Britain. Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion turned 100 this year and join the band.

Perhaps a statto with more time on their hands could research it? It could be an interesting programme piece?

Would be nice to have the centenary kit designed by someone who has at least seen a football shirt once in their life instead of the usual nonsense we get.

A Forest Green fan told me they had been going over 100 years with no relegations. I hadn't realised they had been going as long as that. I think they are a bit like Morecambe in that they were in leagues that did not relegate anyone for most of those years. Also they were saved from relegation from the Conference by technicalities ie other teams breaking rules etc.

Forest Green were actually relegated (not sure of the name of the league they were in at the time) at the end of the 1954/55 season.

If you consider the CURRENT 92 (sorry Bury, 91) English league clubs from the Premiership to League 2, there is definitely only 1 club that have NEVER been relegated (from any league they have ever played in) in their history and they will be 100 years old in 2020.

Re-inventing yourselves with another name (Arsenal) excludes you from this list in my opinion, so we are talking about the history since the original formation of the existing clubs.

So let's hope that the club celebrate their 100 year old non-relegated history by shouting it from the rooftops and let's all be BLOODY PROUD of this.

Happy New Year to all at MFC and to all on here.

Thanks for the Forest Green Stat. I will tell him that if he claims again that they haven't been relegated.

Presumably in the 91 you are treating Wimbledon as an old club with relegations in their CV because they have been credited with the 1988 FA Cup. If they were regarded as a new club then they would have no relegations.
