The squad is filling out nicely! We seem to have enough options in the attacking department - it’s pretty hard to pick the best attacking lineup if all are fit! Defensively we’ve got cover for both fullback positions and quite a few CB’s so that should be OK.
However, it’s in the midfield where the worries begin! Our options for defensive/deep-lying midfield are Kenyon, Tutte, Cranston, Jagne and Wildig. With Tutte and Wildig being injury-prone, Cranston making some costly mistakes (in terms of conceding goals) towards the end of last season, Jagne being very inexperienced and was out for the whole of last season (potentially injury-prone as well) and Alex not having a great range of passing or dribbling, it makes the loss of Flemmo even greater

We have just brought in the 19 y/o Lynch who is a midfielder but, again, he isn’t experienced and he’s probably unlikely to get anywhere near the 1st team squad.

This is what the squad looks like with the 3 new additions:

GK:
Roche (1)
Halstead (2)

Defenders:
Sutton (1)
Old (1)
Lavelle (1)
Brownsword (1)
Bakare (1?)
Conlan (2)
Cranston (2)
Buxton (1)
Brewitt (1/2)

Midfield:
Tutte (1)
Jagne (1)
Mendes Gomes (1)
Wildig (1)
Kenyon (1)
Howard (1/2)
O’Sullivan (2)
Lynch (0)

Forwards:
Leitch-Smith (2)
Stockton (1)
Miller (1) - loan
Hawley (1)
Ellison (1)
Oates (1)

After yesterday I still think we desperately need another centre mid and a winger...

Jay Harris signed this week for Macclesfield from Tranmere. Just the sort of combative midfielder we are in need of after Fleming's retirement.

I am still in shock at seeing Kenyon starting yesterday when better options were on the bench and indeed better options in Mendes-Gomes and Jagne not even making the bench.

Thank you RapidShrimp. Your excellent post on player status is really clear.
It looks like we need quite a few signings to compensate for some of the players we have lost.
I can't believe Slew has been offered a new deal though, unless he has some hugely positive effect in the dressing room.
We need signings in all area, but particularly up front.

I am very impressed by Derek's assessment of players so far and if he rates Slew then I expect to see more from him when the new season starts.

Wasn’t there a rumour about us making our 1st signing later on this week?

I did see on Twitter rumours Ryan Taylor of Plymouth was a target for Derek Adams, he turned down a contract offer with the view of moving back to the north west.

Phillips and Cooney are both out of contract at Burnley this summer according to Transfermarkt.

I'd be in two minds about Taylor. Fully fit I think he'd be a good signing with his previous pedigree under Adams and him and Stockton would provide good competition for each other. Age wouldn't worry me too much as we have Stockton who is 26, but his injury record isn't great. This season just gone has been particularly hampered by injuries.

Interesting.....

Is this a bit of insider news that he MAY come under DA's radar again or just wishful thinking... :?: :?: :?:

Certainly has the experience after a number of years at our level, but not sure about his appearances with Scunny.

Could this be a case of watch this space.... :?: :?: :?:
