O/T Wigan Athletic

O/T Wigan Athletic

Sad news to hear Wigan Athletic has gone into administration- another club reliant on an owner financing them until the money runs out. Prior to Athletic in 1920’s there was a league club Wigan Borough and they went bust. Worrying times for all league clubs.

The sharks will be circling and I have heard Joseph Cala is en route in a taxi wearing his stained fila track suit and carrying his pj's in a B&M's carrier.

The scary thing about all this is people like Cala , Bassini and others will get their hands on clubs at cheap rate due to the pandemic

Your joke about sharks circling will sadly be the normal very soon

Is this another case of a club trying to overspend their way up through the league ? Just curious.

The Administrator says it is a well run club with the right people in place but the new owners have just turned the tap off. The owners have only been in place a few weeks.

Dave Whelen may step in and help. His Grandson and ex WAFC chairman is DoF at Mansfield and they are really splashing the cash. Omar Bogle is on his way there despite interest from Blackpool.

I thought we might have had a bit of sympathy with our club facing something similar in our very recent history.

I do not understand how Wigan had new owners who must have been passed as fit and proper and must have had to guarantee funding was available for the future running of the club! Looks like the EFL have some responsibility for the situation that has arisen today.

It's a little bit more deep rooted for me and I'll make no apologies, they know why!

As I understand it more are they unfit test, e.g. Have they got any bankruptcy, financial clouds, if they don't they are in,not wether they can and will sustain the club,

Not 100% sure but I think it's something like that

With a large number of clubs rumoured to be struggling financially like Wigan Athletic, it is surely time for the Premiership clubs to look again at how the T.V. money is distributed. Of the £400 million distributed to the Football League for the 72 clubs apparently £260 million is used as parachute payments for clubs relegated from the Premier League. This seems very unfair and I believe a substantially larger amount should be given to the League 1 and 2 clubs if the Football League as we know it is to survive. Apparently another 15-20 clubs can be expected to follow Wigan's example without any further financial help, and go into administration- not sure if we are one of these!

Unfortunately I'm unable to take the credit for that one, received it on an email today at work - apparently from a Bolton forum.

In all seriousness I do hope Wigan are able to recover from this - The EFL continue to be asleep at the wheel on these owners tests.

Trying to recall a time when discussing trivial matters on an Internet messageboard has ever been cool? Certainly not since Keith got rid of his Leo Sayer hairstyle ;)

The EFL plan for Wigan has been confirmed - they’ll be hit with a 12 point deduction after their final game of the season against Fulham. As it stands that’d put them third bottom, level on points with Barnsley but 2 points behind Luton and Charlton who have Blackburn (10th) and Leeds (1st) respectively.

However Fulham are 4th and a win could give them automatic promotion if West Brom and Brentford slip up again so it’s not going to be an easy game for Wigan by any means.

After Wigan’s 8-0 thrashing of Hull, they went and drew 2-2 with Charlton so that result would really hurt if Charlton end up surviving at the Latics’ expense. And to add insult to injury, Charlton’s equaliser came in the 93rd minute...
