Great result! They were unbeaten so far. Not sure we were the better team, but we need to pick up points when we're second best and that's what we've done so far.

Despite all their possession, I think we had the best two chances as well with Phillips and the penalty.

Lavelle and Kenyon had terrific games in my view. Have to say Port Vale look like a top top side.

For some reason, Newport's result had disappeared from the table above, so we're actually second, but I'll leave that one, 'cause it looks nice! :D :D :D

It looks like DA has got us organised and able to frustrate and hold off "better" (maybe not!!) teams which means if we can snatch a goal we can always get the 3 points. May not always be attractive - but it's absolutely great to see the position in the table. :D :D :D :D

Think this was an example of the 1-0 masterclass that we were told about.

Very solid defensively in the first half, just lacked a bit of an out-ball. Managed to get our foot on it more in the second while maintaining our superb solidity in defence. Despite Vale having far more of the ball, they created virtually nothing while we had the three best chances of the game and should probably have been ahead by the time we did convert the penalty.

No particular standouts today, just a very solid all round team performance. The one shoutout I would give (as has been mentioned previously) is to Jake Turner. Didn't have any proper saves to make really, but hoovered up a few loose balls and crosses really excellently. His handling was top quality in incredibly difficult conditions and took pressure off our defence at some important moments.

Excellent result despite not playing that well by the sounds of it. Couldn't watch today as we bought a new car this pm which took a couple of hours to get sorted.

Can't get my head around being up there in the league. Just hope the results continue. Results over performance at the moment as the performance will come the more we win.

Certainly DA is working his magic once again. Not the friendliest of guys but who bloody cares.

How did Liam Gibson play :?: :?: :?: I'm expecting big things from him providing we look after him well during the week.

Gibson was solid, I thought all 4 defenders had a good game. They had a lot of possession but barely created a chance, which says a lot about how we defended. He had one wobbly moment where he headed it straight out of Turner's hands, but not sure where the fault lay for that.

I'd agree. Back four & keeper all looked solid and will get better as they play more games. We didn't look likely to score from open play, and probably 0-0 would have been a fair result, because Port Vale didn't look like scoring either. First half they were slightly better, second half, we were slightly better. Nicely taken penalty and I'll take that!

Derek said on Radio Lancs, words to the effect of... "I have no problem with the opposition having the ball in their own half". At one point, Port Vale probably made about ten passes or more, but barely made it to the halfway line.

PS Port Vale will be up there come the end of the season, so that makes it a better result.

A tactical masterclass. He kept Joyce off the ball and allowed their centre backs to distribute the ball to much less effect which then meant we could pick up the second balls. When you hear Derek's interview, the performance becomes more impressive. The effort the players put in to implement the system and win a game against a very good side was fantastic.

just heard the Derek Adams interview,

liked his point about stats and percentage of possession and that defenders knocking the ball about in their own half doesn't win you games.

I thought today's win was the most impressive to date, the defending was immense and with a few more goals up top, the play offs can't be discounted.

I agree Keith. We've found our best back 5. Turner is looking more solid with each game, the centre back pairing is a good foil for each other and the full-backs look solid, despite Cooney having a torrid first half today against Rodney. Second half he did a lot better. Gibson barely put a foot wrong and was my man of the match. Just did his job from a defensive perspective and is a big improvement on Hendrie.

The first half reminded me of the Southend game in which we were 10-15 yards too deep in the possession and without the ball. That being said, we created the clearest chance in the first half from a well-worked corner when Gomez delivered it into Cole and he should have finished. I've been impressed with Cole in every game. He works tirelessly and holds the ball up well. He can't do it alone though so when Wildig, Phillips and co get near him for knockdowns we look productive.

Second half we edged our way into the game more and by the end we looked the more likely. The move in which their keeper saved well from Phillips involved some beautiful intricate passes and a lovely dummy from Cole.

We've beat a very good Port Vale side who will be there or thereabouts this year and second in the league. Great stuff!
