When we were merely cheering on 'our' champions in a knockout competition against the champions of other nations in Europe, then I'd agree with you.

Now, though, each successive year the top four do well in Europe it puts them even further out of reach of the other clubs some of us support. And ManU are the epitomy of what the 'top four' cartel is all about. They were a major driving force in the G14 group when it was formed.

They saw a window of opportunity while they were again at the top of our league and wanted to make sure they remained there. They were still hurting from years of playing number two (and worse) to Liverpool and others and never wanted their 'brand' to suffer that period of trophyless seasons again. They wanted (with others) to use their muscle to create a false elite, driven by mega-millions available from Sky which - after a few years - would set them apart forever.

That was precisely why the G14 clubs forced Uefa to create this competition for them. Look at the G14 manifesto and it's quite clear. It exists merely to promote the interests of their member clubs.

They'll work with Uefa and domestic leagues while it suits them but if it doesn't they have threatened several times to go it alone because they don't see why they should 'risk' their status as top dogs by such things as straight knockout competitions in which they stand to lose out on the guarantee of those millions EACH AND EVERY year. They wanted a guaranteed numer of European games every year.

Nothing in football should be guaranteed but this was the closest thing to a certain way of achieving it for them and their mates.

Look what's happened to our domestic league since they have got it properly established.

Supporters of other clubs now have a vested interest in the top four NOT doing well in Europe.

It shouldn't be like that - agreed. We should all be able to get behind our single champions in a straight knockout tournament with the glory of European triumph and a 'bit' of extra dosh as the reward.

But it's them who created the situation so they can't moan now if fans of other clubs want them to lose.

Its an irrational , unhealthy passionate hatred of anything man u for me as well I'm afraid and I know it will be with me till the grave...... The 4-1 humbling of them this season was just TOO GOOD TO BELIEVE I thought I'd died and gone to heaven, I did honestly.
I've watched the match again 6 or 7 times since just to confirm it really did happen ! I'm now down to pausing at individual faces in the crowd as the goals rattle in 1...2...3..4 particularly ol' whisky nose and then he comes out with that nonsense that they played the better football It'll taken years off that fellas life will that 1-4 at home to L/Pool - even when they clean up this season it'll be a BLOT on the whole thing.

I've tried to analyse WHY I hate them - its just the claim to be the most successful British team I suppose - like ferguson said before this years hiding Liverpool always was and always will be the BIG one and then there's rooneys regrettable comments about how much he hates L'Pool and gary nevilles antics ...... This season was so soo sweet though because even when L/Pool have been dominant in previous times we've never done that well against them.

But as someone mentioned previously the 'whole' things gone mental and I stopped going to L/Pool because it became almost inaccessible - I remember feeling alienated in the earlier heady days when we went everywhere to watch them in the early cup rounds and then when the quarter / semi final games came along you couldn't get a ticket because the 3 or 4 games a season brigade had decided to have a night out. Then the corporate side of things got a real foot-hold. I know season ticket holders who couldn't get tickets for Real Madrid away this season and already had flights booked - went out and some ended up buying dud tickets and others ended up watching it in a bar.
But I'll always love LFC and hate man u with equal passion.

It amazes me how many people get really pissed even at the thought of Man Utd.

I can't for the life of me understand why they can annoy so many people. Is it because of their wealth or their ability to win trophies year in and year out?

Or, as I suspect, just sheer envy?

It may well be the usual British trait of wanting to put everybody down who is successful also being a factor.........

I hate Man U with a passion, always have always will. It's ingrained.

I'm 31 and although i may support Morecambe now, there will always be a little bit of my heart that belongs to Liverpool and always will.

My Dad supported Liverpool when Phil Taylor was manager so i basically had no choice. Everton were the biggest team in Merseyside then. And Forest, Everton, and countless others were more successful than that lot at Salford ever were.

I hate their fans, and i have many people i class as friends who support them. They were strangely reluctant to pick up their phone a couple of weeks ago.

I hate Alex Ferguson. He must be the only manager in the country that seems to have a camera on him when their teams scores, the only knighted person that the press are almost instructed to call Sir every time they talk about him. He is a good manager not a great manager. Great managers have tactics and don't have to rely on biased refs, linesmen, FA officials.

The only 2 decent things to come out of United are Sammy and Twissy, but i can say that cos Liverpool had Mark Wright and Mark Lawrenson. So it balances.

I never want Morecambe to play Liverpool, it would be too weird.

But if we played United. Grrr and roarrr and that.

As Keith said earlier, success breeds support. Most people around my age seem to be Liverpool fans because they grew up with them winning everything in the 1970s and 80s. Its the same as how there's now a lot of Manchester United fans of a younger age. Graeme Le Saux once said he didn't actually support a team when he was younger, just whoever was top of the league. Most "supporters" have never even been within 50 miles of their club's stadium, or the town/city in which it is based. Ikea in Warrington is not Anfield.

Also, I think you'll find every manager is on camera when goals are scored. Watch any televised match and when the goal goes in it'll show them jumping around. Rafael Benitez is as bad as Cristiano Ronaldo for posing and posturing. Modern football is a pantomime.

Speaking of pantomime dames, the press are forced to call Sir Ben Kingsley by his full title, else he won't speak to them.

Old Trafford is now in Trafford, which is part of Greater Manchester, and isn't far from central Manchester, which makes it Manchester as far as I'm concerned.
Maine Road is in Moss Side, which is most definitely Manchester.
