O/T Mosquito virus

O/T Mosquito virus

Postby redrobo » Wed May 12, 2021 12:50 pm

According to an article in The Mail On Line the UK is in line for an outbreak of the deadly virus Zika Virus as a result of an increase in the UK Mosquito population brought in via cars and trucks from Europe over the coming months.

The mosquito population is increasing due to the current weather and the number of stagnant water pools that dot our towns and country side. The threat is between March and November.

People are being advised to cover all exposed skin areas to protect themselves from attack and what could turn out to be distressing consequencies.

As if we haven't had enough to contend with, now this warning of what could be next....

I'd be most concerned about getting 'news' from The Daily Mail!

According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention & Control:

"Zika virus is considered an emerging infectious disease with the potential to spread to new areas where the Aedes mosquito vector is present. There is no evidence of transmission Zika virus in Europe to date".

Don't forget, it is a specific mosquito that has the potential to spread Ziko. This is not routinely found in the UK. The risk in the UK is negligible. If you go on holiday to southern Spain it is still negligible, but ever so slightly less negligible.

Neil, did you read the article or just the headline? It says it's incurable, not deadly except in the case of foetal abnormalities. It also says by the time the mosquitoes get here we'll probably have a vaccine.

Where in the article does it say "over the coming months"?
Where in the article does it say "brought in via cars and trucks from Europe"?
Where in the article does it say "The mosquito population is increasing due to the current weather and the number of stagnant water pools that dot our towns and country side"?

The mosquito that carries the virus is slowly working its way north due to climate change.

"Mosquitoes carrying Zika will come to the UK due to global warming, the Department of Health warned yesterday.

"Chief scientific adviser Chris Whitty told MPs there is a threat of ‘a large epidemic’ of the currently incurable disease in Britain and elsewhere in northern Europe. However, he told the Commons environment committee that by the time the Aedes mosquito – which carries the virus – arrives here, there would likely be a vaccine against Zika".

Even the Daily Mail article isn't suggesting that people need to cover up or they'll get infected in the next few months. In a few years time it will get here, due to climate change.

I'm now going to go and wash my computer in Detol after visiting The Daily Mail site!

The article I posted was first published in 2020.

The latest article on the same subject was posted on yesterdays Mail On Line on my mobile but unfortunately I can no longer get a copy of to post on our forum. However it did discuss how the virus is entering our country and gave a warning about potential deaths and the need to be vigilant about clothing.
