Dreamland?

Postby Mark S » Sun Aug 29, 2021 11:51 am

Did that actually happen yesterday? Did we not only play Sheffield Wednesday as an equal in the Football League 1, but we beat them too? Really? In front of a record crowd of 5,488 too? What on earth is going on? It’s ridiculous!

As Shrimps fans we are in dreamland. The highest level we have ever played. The best squad we have ever had. Facilities at The Mazuma are improving (to the point where I haven't seen a single negative post for the last two matches). Superb performances with football on the deck and confidence oozing from the players. Record crowds that are really adding to the matchday experience. Competing in the league and also beating the likes of Championship side Blackburn and Sheffield Wednesday. We have been in every game and could have got something out of every game. We are pinching ourselves and still not quite believing that this is happening. Happy to take 7 points from five games.

On the opposite side of the coin we have Stephen Robinson who I suspect is actually disappointed we haven't had more points on the board and not only expects, but believes that we have the squad to compete with the best. He was not happy with our first half performance yesterday and I would not want to have been in the dressing room at half time.

In Robbo we have a winner. He has hand picked his squad and he has full confidence in them. He has surrounded himself with a quality backroom team as well and he is here to make a name for himself and for us too. When Derek ditched us I was a little nervous, but I think we have stepped up a league with managers too with Robbo. You can tell the players have massive respect for him too. I am so excited about this season and what it will bring.

Thank you to each supporter yesterday that made the atmosphere so amazing! Robbo has said himself that positive support makes a massive difference to the players. The fans were superb yesterday (again!) and have also stepped up a class this season. It is great to see so many fans back at The Mazuma that drifted off previously. Once a Shrimp, always a Shrimp! Days like this are life memories and we will never forget them. I suspect that more will be coming and that season ticket sales will continue to climb. There is a real buzz around the town and long may that continue!

Sorry for long, rambling post but I was still buzzing this morning thinking about yesterday!

I don't normally quote a large block of text. It helps the flow to avoid doing so, just pick out the salient points that I want to respond to. But in this case...

THIS!

All of it.

100%.

Including the "still buzzing this morning" :D :D :D

I said recently, I think Derek Adams was the perfect manager for a COVID-19 season. No fans. No need to interact with us. No-one complaining about the style of football, which was 'functional' (and functioned really, really well). Sub 30% possession would not cut it at many clubs, with fans watching. But I also was concerned when he left.

Now, we've taken a step-up in manager. More attractive football, a more interactive manager. Enthusiasm & positivity throughout. The season ticket initiative has led to a fantastic atmosphere. The Mazuma Stadium really rocks when it is full. Large away followings have helped. PNE, Rotherham & in particular Wednesday fans have played their part, but our fans have been fantastic! What a noise!!! And it is contagious, even the Berlin Wall were singing occasionally! And JB's was bouncing after the game too.

Everything feels really positive. Isn't it great?

Don't really get the Anti Derek vibe, we had the highest xG in the whole of League 2 and but for a couple of dodgy decisions, would have won the league. A miracle was achieved last season after limited expectations for nearly a decade and Derek was the main reason. Everything that happens now is because of the way he changed this club.

I agree that Robbo looks a class act and he is here to build a football club where as Derek was here to get his foot back in to the Management door.

The younger fans we have are a credit to themselves and the club. The noise they make at home and away is the loudest it has ever been. They don't go causing trouble and have got the Mazuma bouncing. They deserve massive praise.

Yesterday was crazy and everyone stepped up to the plate on and off the field.

I am very grateful for what Adams did for our club but I didn't shed too many tears when he left due in part to his lack of empathy with the fans.

Now he's at a so called bigger club at Bratford and after yesterday's defeat there is a certain amount of criticism directed at him and in particular not accepting responsibility for a week of 'lighter' training sessions on the advice of one of his coaching staff.

We all know that DA insisted on Sunday being just another training day but the Bratford fans on their forum are not in total agreement with that policy.

I suggested way back in June of his appointment that the knives would be out sooner than later and it would appear that those knives are being sharpened..... :o

Empathy? He came across fine to me. I remember him coming in to JB's before the Carlisle A game and thanking us all for our support. I don't understand what difference having a matey manager makes. Adams dragged us up by the scruff of our necks and showed us we didn't have to keep feeling sorry for ourselves. We should be forever grateful rather than reveling in his defeats. Robbo is different, talks with a different tone to Derek and will build this club on the foundations. He is very impressive and the club are lucky to have him.

It wasn't an 'anti-Derek' comment. It was an explanation as to what I think happened last season. He absolutely transformed the club, and I had hoped when we won promotion, he would remain with us. But after he left, I think we've appointed an even better manager, who I believe fits the ethos of the club generally. A manager who wants to build something special. Derek laid the foundations. Stephen is building a castle!

In JB's after the match the place was rocking! Can't remember the last time there was singing in there after a match, there usually wasn't enough people in there to fill an average rock band! Unbelievably i heard a woman moaning it was too dark and not enough seats in the place and it was a sh**hole!! Very nearly told her to go home then! :o The only moaning i've heard so far in recent times! Long may these amazing times continue, we've suffered long enough previously. COYS :D

Robbo has made a promising start. Adams though is a club legend with what he achieved. None of this would be happening if it wasn't for him.

Derek changed the mentality of the club and showed budget doesn't matter in league 2 and we could and should be aiming higher and he had a philosophy for league 2 which worked well in a covid year.

SR has now taken the best bits from last year and built on it further. Also funny how you dont hear SR saying well as long as we finish 5th off bottom.

I think Derek would have got found out in league 1, we have already seen teams doubling up on Cole at least SR understands we need more attacking options and a plan B. From what Plymouth fans said Derek always stuck with plan A and was too stuborn to change it.

Do you know Carlisle had the 2nd smallest wage bill in league 2 but noone says little old carlisle.

I'm with everyone saying DA was important in changing the mindset of the club. He's a super intense and focused person, and I think he has a maximum of 3/4 years at a club given how intense he can be to the point of being difficult and awkward. Looking back, that was just what we needed. Someone to shake things up and make us believe that we can actually achieve things. I remember right at the start of the season post-Cheltenham he said he wanted to change the mindset of the club. He definitely did that!

SR is super focused and always on it, but in a more energetic and emotive way. He's way more personable (more reminiscent of JB in some aspects!) and gets the bigger picture about club building by developing young talents etc.

DA was exactly the person we needed to get the club going in the right direction. SR is a better character for building the club further in a long term way IMO, and hopefully we will see that come off over the next few seasons!

You are right, there wasn't an anti Derek comment which is why i said the anti Derek vibe. Well, that was until Neil weighed in about being upset about the lack of Derek hugs!
