Internationals

Postby Redalert1970 » Thu Sep 02, 2021 12:13 am

Looks like our fixtures could get disrupted quite a bit this season

There is also international matches in October and November

Great for the players to get call ups but not ideal for the manager and coaching staff who get players returning on a wed or thu morning for a Saturday game

Matches against Cambridge home on 8th Oct and Wigan home 13th November could be cancelled ????

Northern Ireland seniors have matches on 9th & 12th October, and 12th & 15th November. The U21 then have further matches on 25th & 29th March.

Scotland & Iceland U21 also have the October, November and March matches.

You raise a very good point.

Oxford at home in March could also meet the same fate.

Who'd have thought that not only would we face fixture issues due to having too many international players, but one of them was actually a full international? What an amazing time to be supporting Morecambe!

So how did that work out then?

Jokull was on bench for Iceland earlier (won 2 - 1 in Belarus)

How many full internationals have Morecambe had before? I can't remember any, especially making their debut!

Off the top of my head...
...all playing for us after their international careers were over.
Ronnie Clayton... Blackburn and England
Keith Newton...Blackburn and England
Peter Sayers... Cardiff and Wales

Plus...
David Artell...Gibraltar (after he left us ?)

May be others for far flung countries...?

How many playing whilst signed for Morecambe though ?

Steve Old, New Zealand full international before he came to us. And Olympian, as he says on his Twitter profile. Only Morecambe player to go to the Olympics?

That was Alfie’s 3rd cap for them. Many more to come hopefully!

Tony Capaldi also appeared for NI seniors, again though it was before he came to us!

In our current squad we’ve also got Greg Leigh who’s still a senior Jamaica international, and Ayunga has been called up for the Kenyan senior team in the past as well.

Chris Mafoumbi was an active Congo international when we had him a couple of seasons ago. I’ve resorted to Google now!

Also had Danny Ward who starred at the Euros.

Joe Lewis in the England squad for two games but didn’t get on the pitch. Not long after he left us.

Leighton James had a habit of picking himself when he was Manager. One of Wales all time greats.
