Burton 3 Morecambe 2 [Gibson, Stockton] LIVE THREAD

We look poor. Can't see where a goal is going to come from for us. Teams have seen that if they stop the ball getting to Stockton, we haven't got much to offer. I say this in the hope that they can prove me wrong!
Let's hope the subs can make a difference.

I disagree, I think it is the other end of the pitch that is the problem.

It's fair to say they have marshaled Stockton well tonight he has barely had a touch tonight

Yes, true, the defending has been poor. To be fair, Burton haven't had to stop Stockton, he just hasn't had any service.
We must stop scoring first.......

Stockton just cleared off the line after ANOTHER free header from a Burton corner.

Good save from Letheren. Burton have created far more clear cut chances and probably should be completely out of touch by now... (not that 3-1 isn't out of touch with three minutes left!)

90+3 long throw from Cooney, flicked on by O'Conner and Stockton scores with his head.

Three soft goals gifted to Burton and to be honest, they could have had six. We need to learn how to defend. The odd thing is, I don't think any defender as an individual, was poor, quite the opposite, Wooton & O'Connor played well as individuals in the centre and both Cooney & Gibson tackled well and got forward too. But as a unit, they were completely disjointed.

Well the score line flatters us a lot. We were desperately out of touch this game. It could quite easily been 5 or 6 for Burton, they were always dangerous on the break.
We have lots of talented players but they didn't gel tonight. Great consolation goal from Cole, shame there wasn't another few minutes to play
Need to get back to the flowing ball to feet football we played earlier in the season.
Onward we go. COME ON YOU MORECAMBE REDS.

That flowing football seemed to stop after the first international break it killed our momentum.

Keith I thought O'connor was awful tonight listening to a neutral Gab Sutton was interesting he didn't seem to rate O'connor and thought we lacked a defensive midfielder. I agree as well as conceding from set pieces we seem to concede a lot from 25 yards out.

We never replaced Yann Songo'o, our best player last season. Toums can sit and dictate but isn't combative enough and the other midfield lads are a bit samey for me.

Agree Berlinwaller we need a strong CB and defensive midfielder.

Robbo after the game: “The squad was put together very quickly - I take full responsibility for that. We know what we need to work on in training, and what we need to do at Christmas.”

O’Connor had a few excellent moments in the game, however it’s clear that he’s at fault for many more. I don’t want to bark up the same tree we were doing a few weeks ago about “leadership problems” etc, but we don’t look organised defensively at all.

Hate to nave to repeat myself but I suggested pre season that for all SR's signings we needed an out and out defensive midfielder very much in the Yann mold.

On a different subject 'where is McPake'.....not suggesting he can do that role but not been seen on the bench for a number of games. :?: :?: :?:

AOC has been poor for most of the season so far, and certainly not captain material.
We leak goes for fun, some of the mistakes are basics of football, why was no one near front post for their first goal is mental, this stuff is taught in kids football never mind league 1.

Defence need to be held accountable, Can't let players skip by you like that.

I feel a bit for O Connor to be honest

Think a lot of fans are using him as a scape goat to be fair and I don’t think that’s right

Against Lincoln he was fantastic and was one of the reasons we picked up three points

We need to get behind him and all the players especially when they are having a tough spell

I'm with you on this. Yes, he's making mistakes, including their second, where he completely lost track of their goalscorer who simply stepped away from him, to get way too much space, but he also got some fantastic tackles in and drove forward well too. If people only look for the mistakes, they miss the rest. Don't get me wrong, he needs to improve, but so do all the defenders. Gibson scored and got forwards well, but also played about four simple passes straight in to touch and gave the ball away cheaply.

The defence need to start working together much more. They are all decent individuals but are making silly, basic, errors. Equally, the midfield aren't offering much protection.

It is certainly entertaining at the moment. Can't wait for a boring 1-0 win!

Some stats for the O’Connor moaners. Thanks to Carwash Terrace on Twitter.

Duels Won&Lost vs. Burton (Starting XI):

Most Duels Won: A. O’Connor - 10 (91%)

Least Duels Won: A. Phillips - 0 (0%)

Team Success: 48% Duels Won

Our defence was over run because the players in front of them can barely put a tackle in, don’t press hard enough and don’t chase the ball - Alfie McAlmont excepted from Burton.

Adam Philips was dropped at Accy and Robbo questioned his work rate publicly in an interview. He’s a brilliantly talented player on his day but maybe that’s not enough and needs to show consistency.

We’re missing McLoughlin, who at least brings a bit of steel.

Posh is spot on, it isn't about one individual. The team as a collective are falling short defensively and it is costing is. Phillips has slipped in to the bad habits of last season where he drifts and becomes a luxury footballer. Shane does add the legs and the tenacity and is sorely missed. The midfield us the puzzle that Robbo needs to solve rather than changing defenders.
