FA Cup Round 2

Surely Tier 7 v Tier 3 at home has got to be a dead cert for TV.
The draw couldn't have been much better for Buxton. They'll see the tie as winnable and the TV cameras will want to be there to see it.

Looking at the Northern Premier League, it doesn't feel like that long ago that these were our regular games, with very familiar teams. Matlock, South Shields, Stalybridge, Witton... ...Lancaster!

See they play the Dollies at the Big Chopper on Nov 20th. Pity we're at Fleetwood. Might have gone.

This is not about us, our name will hardly be mentioned unless they come up with Shrimpers, the whole programme will be spent talking about the lowest ranked team in the competition who play at the highest, snowiest ground (bar Oldham) and they will sense a GIANT killing :o

Charlton and Plymouth/Sheff Wed will be the same.

I think it will end up being the Friday night live game. Great news for those that can't get tickets and a bit of extra cash for us too. It's the main headline in the FA Cup draw on the BBC so they have already identified it as the plum tie.

Potential banana skin indeed.....

Let's hope that between now and the game that we manage to get some training on a plastic pitch which I think our training base at the Uni has, otherwise to play on plastic with little preparation could be fatal.

Can imagine the atmosphere will be quite hostile with fans very close to pitch side.

As for the game they will play for their lives. Close us down giving us zero space in which to work and they will shoot on sight. 20 shots v York.... :!: :!: :!:

Looking at their league table they haven't lost a game in the lague to date. Dangerous opponents indeed.

Their goal scorer looked to have a turn of speed and his goal from outside the box gives an indication of their shoot on sight approach.

By no means an easy tie in fact in many ways it couldn't be worse as they will treat it like their final and if we don't win the tie we'll be the mugs of the round.

Just hope that our lads are up for it and don't treat them will little respect as that could be our downfall.

I'd be happy with a draw which is possible given the ground and their style of play which for some of our players will be a new experience.

I agree. Derek trained on the plastic pitches at the Uni. Robbo needs to think about who can/can't play on plastic and do a few training sessions on the plastic with the players who can play on it to work out his best squad to take. Hopefully, there'll be only a few players unable to play on plastic so it should be just a matter of them practising to get used to it.

.....and with the expected return of our injured strikers selection may depend on the players ability to adjust to a plastic pitch.

Courtney Duffus signed for us from Bromley FC who have a 3G pitch so at least one of our squad has played on a similar surface before.

You aren't serious? Agreed, if we underestimate or disrespect them, we could lose and look like mugs. But if we do that, we deserve to look like mugs. I'm sure Stephen will have the lads focussed and professional.

But I can think of lots of ties that would be worse than this one!

Which of these would you prefer to be away at?

Yeovil Town, MK Dons, Stevenage, Oxford United, Bristol Rovers, Sutton United, Burton Albion, Port Vale, Lincoln City, Hartlepool United, Wycombe Wanderers, AFC Wimbledon, Gillingham, Cheltenham Town, Colchester United, Wigan Athletic, Solihull Moors, Leyton Orient, Tranmere Rovers, Northampton Town, Cambridge United, Bradford City, Exeter City, Doncaster Rovers, Mansfield Town, Walsall, Swindon Town, Rotherham United, Bolton Wanderers, Stockport County, Gateshead, Altrincham, Charlton Athletic, Boreham Wood, St Albans City, Kidderminster Harriers, FC Halifax Town, Carlisle United, Shrewsbury Town, Salford City, Chesterfield, Rochdale, Notts County, Sheffield Wednesday, Plymouth Argyle, Ipswich Town, Oldham Athletic, Barrow, Portsmouth or Harrogate Town?

Prepare & apply ourselves correctly and we have a fantastic opportunity to progress to the Third Round for the second season in succession. I wouldn't swap a trip to Buxton for one to Plymouth!

I agree with Keith. No excuses not to win this. Sure, they will be up for it but we should have far too much quality. I think plastic pitches have moved on also since the 80s/90s, so as long as we get some training on something similar it shouldn't be too much of a disadvantage.

If we keep defending like we are doing Buxton will fancy their chances that’s for sure

We have played 22 games and conceded 40 goals

See they won again last night 2-0 at home. Now 15 games into their season and still unbeaten in the league. That banana skin's getting more slippery.

This lot are ambitious and are going the right way about promotion to the Conference North. When their very successful previous manager decided on taking his much delayed family holiday rather than leading them in the FA Cup round 1 at York he was dispensed with immediately. Their directors have put money into the club and they mean business. They ain't messing around and they are very decent for the level!

Add to that the 3G pitch which must give them an advantage, a raucous home following of 3,000 plus, a nation willing them on to victory and we really have our work cut out to get something out of the game.

Make no mistake there is no room for warm little mittens and skulking about on the wing out of the way against this lot. Whatever team takes the field need to man up and meet thunder with thunder.

I've always felt the FA cup means a lot to us as fans and recent insipid displays at Dover and Halifax still leave a sour taste in the mouth. I hope the players get this and bust a gut to get a result. Right now I'd snap your hand off for a draw and take our chances at the Mazuma.

We'll see!

There are about 10 autographs on the back of the programme, but difficult to decipher !

I watched the documentary about Macclesfield last night and it sounds just like them, crowds of 3000 plastic pitch to bring income in etc There were some teams in their league that I remember us playing against.

Apparently players in the Northern Counties league have agents :o

Notice that in their match against Nantwich last night Buxtons captain and centre half, the ex Barrow Josh Granite got himself sent off for violent conduct so he's out of the cup game. They apparently don't have many if any fit options to replace him and he would have been the obvious one to try and contain Cole.

Slight problem for them to say the least.

Yep no doubt. They do look quite slick up front but have hit the buffers a little in the last two games losing at Lancaster and only drawing with a bottom of the table Nantwich yesterday. They apparently have a small but quality squad for the level but are now struggling a bit with injuries. Losing Granite is a massive blow to their defensive abilities as he has been the standout man for them recently. I'll never take anything for granted, particularly after being at that horrible cup tie against real minnows Maine Road back in the day. However I'm beginning to feel more confident now as the tie draws near.

Hi, a number of us older ones will remember our Maine Road defeat, however when you mention them being real minnows, I haven’t checked this, but I would think that the steps between League Two and the NPL is greater than what was the NPL and the NW Counties division 2( in fact I would think it is currently 5 as opposed to the 4 it was then) . Currently it’s like a National League team beating a Premier League team, and myself or Mr Potato Head don’t need reminding of 2 of the last times that that has happened!!
