I would have yours apart from Wooten for Delaney and Arthur for Phillips. I think Phillips is more of an impact sub.

I certainly would play Gibson at left back and he looked good when he came on in the last home game even though the result was another shocker.

Letheran
Cooney Wootton O’Gonner Gibson
Toums McAlmont Shane Leigh
Phillips Stockton

Robinson needs to start the experienced professionals and bring on the young lads to pep things up as the game progresses. Since Sam slung his hook we have lost leadership at the back. It looks, and is, a ramshackle mess. Do we even have a defensive coach?

Robbo signed plenty of players who are terrific at the fancy stuff. Trouble is they don’t have an end product. It was exciting at the start of this season. Now it’s frustrating to watch as players like Ayunga and McDonald tie themselves in knots and the oppo just let them get on with it

We need some of Jimbo’s grit

Letheren
Cooney-AOC-Wootton-Leigh
McLoughlin-Toums-Wildig
Gnahoua-Stockton-McDonald

To be honest, I don't really care who plays in net or alongside AOC. May as well give Letheren a little run, and I think overall Wootton has been the lesser of two evils. Cooney back in as he offers a bit more defensively than McLaughlin. I think there was a good logic in SR trying to get a settled backline, but it hasn't worked out.

Jones rightly kept his place in midfield ahead of Toums off the back of his good performances, but Toums was excellent when he came on in the second half (despite the result) and deserves the shirt back from that. McLoughlin one of the first names on the team sheet. Wildig > McCalmont for me, McCalmont's a brilliant footballer but seems to switch into U23 mode for long periods which I'm starting to get frustrated by.

Think there are some short-term memories with Ayunga. He's more than shown he's got the quality for this division, so I think claims he's not up to the level are silly, but his form has been way off recently and his lack of tracking back is increasingly frustrating. Needs a shot in the arm to know that actually, he can be dropped. McDonald has struggled to make an impact going forward, but at least he puts the hard yards in pressing and going back. Gnahoua is a solid, if not spectacular, option at this level. Would like to see at least one of McPake or Price on the bench hungry to make an impact.

I like the shout of Leigh at left wing for a bit of extra security, and I think Gibson is unlucky after his second half performance against MK Dons. But I think something that's been missed is the difference between attacking from full back, and attacking from the wing. I once heard Ashley Cole speak about it on TV somewhere - you have more space in front of you to attack from full back compared to a winger, which is something I think Leigh thrives on and being on the wing would temper that.

Don't see much point in changing shape. 3-5-2 has generally only worked well as a mid-game switch. The problems this team have are ones that I don't think a change in formation solves. May as well play in something we look a bit more comfortable in and that the players were signed for.

I hope you are right that Ayunga is League 1 material, littleshrimp. I am not as sure as you are. I agree about Freddie. It's time we gave him a chance to show what he is capable of. I would have Toums in my side whatever the circumstances, he is quality.

Letheren
Cooney - AOC - Mensah - Leigh
McLoughlin - Toums - Jones
McCalmont
Stockton - Obeka

Radically different than what we've gone with before but time for a complete rethink.

McDonald (or Twinkle Toes) was excellent v Buxton which for me indicated that he's good v poor opposition but can't cut it at EFL1. Not surprising that Walsall let him go as he flattered to deceive there also.

Like a lot of supporters I would like to see Obika paired with Cole Stockton but his recovery seems to be taking ages. I am sure we were told ages ago that he was six weeks from full fitness but that was longer ago than 6 weeks. Was it a worse injury than we first thought, are we slow to reintroduce players to the team or do some players like Darren Anderton some time ago prefer to be on the sick list?

There's no conspiracy - it's a serious hamstring injury, the return from which needs to be managed with a lot of care. Not forgetting the fact that he will be way off full match sharpness. Better to build him in slowly, rather than chuck him straight back in there and risk another injury.

Well, I got the formation right! I think it generally worked, but still undone by soft defending. Has Tooms picked up a knock, he wasn't even on the bench?
