I think the problem he might have at Morecambe with that transfer strategy is trying to move players on I'm really not sure who would take some of them.
Carson was a very good goalkeeper for us. Up there with the likes of John Ruddy and Darren Randolph in the group of our best in the last 20 years. It was really unfortunate how things ended up for him at the club.
He was good with reaction stops, comfortable claiming crosses and his distribution was also very good. I think the time he missed through injury overshadows just how good he was for us at his best, which was the 17/18 season.
His first season had a 'sliding doors' moment in that Brendan Rodgers wanted to sign him for Celtic after Craig Gordon picked up an injury in the closing days of the January window. Depending on what story you believe Celtic weren't willing to pay the £500k we were looking for given he was our #1 and in great form or we accepted their offer but weren't willing to let him go until we had his replacement confirmed and that replacement opted to sign for another club.
Either way he ended up staying and bettered our clean sheet record previously set by Randolph.
The feeling was that we wouldn't stand in his way if an acceptable offer came in after the Celtic stuff and brought in Mark Gillespie (now at Newcastle) essentially to replace him but despite a few rumours of Cardiff being interested nothing really happened so he stuck around.
He was establishing himself as #1 for Northern Ireland but developed a deep vein thrombosis and that's where it started going wrong. The DVT kept him out indefinitely, Gillespie took his chance and established himself as #1 so by the time Carson was back fit he found himself on the bench. Gillespie's consistent form meant he got his move to Newcastle, Carson signed an extension and started last season as our #1 but tore his meniscus at the end of October which kept him out for an extended period.
We rushed him back in December as our form had gone off a cliff but he broke down again in his 2nd game back which pretty much kept him out for the season. We brought in Liam Kelly on loan then went all in to make the loan permanent in the summer.
He's too good a goalkeeper to be sat on the bench so it felt inevitable that we wouldn't stand in his way if he got another offer of first team football.
The story seems to have been that there was a move planned for him to go back to Hartlepool (his family is based in the North East) but Dundee United came in at the last minute and offered him a 2 year deal and presumably a promise that he'd start as there was talk of them selling Siegrist but he got injured in the closing weeks of the last window which meant any deal that was lined up fell through and has left Carson back on the bench once Siegrist was back fit.
His last appearance for United was 18th December in a 1-0 loss against Rangers at Ibrox so he's fit and by all accounts he had a very good game.
If you're looking at a goalkeeper then given he seems to be back and healthy it'd make sense. Carson seemed to get on really well with Robinson, he talked positively about his man management.
