Ukrainian National Anthem.

Ukrainian National Anthem.

Postby Phoenix Shrimp 2017 » Sat Feb 26, 2022 10:52 am

This is probably never going to happen but how would anyone feel about a show of solidarity with the heroic people of Ukraine by playing the Ukrainian National anthem followed by a minutes applause prior to todays game.

I guess the club are not allowed to make Political gestures due to EFL rules but could it be done unofficially say 10 minutes before kick off?

Sport globally appears to be taking a stance against Russian aggression so could we play a small part too?

Me too. NATO and the West is allowing Putin to get away with murder in Ukraine. Call his bluff about nuclear war and at least set-up a No Fly Zone. If he gets away with it again - he took Crimea without the West doing anything about it we must remember - the Baltic States will be next his shopping list. As NATO members, we would be obliged to respond. So why not do so now?

!00% in agreement with this show of solidarity with Ukraine.

Can't understand why the West apply sanctions after the event rather than before to show that *astard in Russia that he's a murderer in what he is doing.

And perhaps dispense with the air raid siren before the match

I was thinking along the same lines Glagys. Definitely not appropriate at the moment.

It might upset the EFL but by playing the Ukraine National Anthem prior to the game would be a show of solidarity with Ukraine and has to be worth any flack the club may get afterwards.

You answered your own question. Ukraine isn't in NATO, that's why not now. Russia did the same in Georgia and still controls about 20% of that country. As awful as what Putin is doing in Ukraine, is this where we would choose to enter in to WW3? Get Finland's membership of NATO through quickly. Get large NATO forces in Poland, Slovakia, Hungary & Romania. They will be useful helping to set up refugee camps and a show of strength along the Ukrainian border.

Posted that, then went looking at the latest news and see Putin is now threatening Finland & Sweden if they apply to join NATO.

She does speak some truth. The US & UK have blood on our hands. Look at the mess in Iraq, Libya & Syria for starters. How many innocent people have died because of 'our' actions?

Not responding to the calls for national anthems and a show of solidarity, but MFC have a connection with the city of LVIV in the Ukrainian. However it will only be remembered by about 450 Shrimps. Not fully checked the records or my programme collection, but we played Jupan of Lviv in a open doors match back in about 1996 or 1997. Jupan FC were over in this country for a couple weeks training and playing and had connections with the college. Dave Edge was on the college staff at that time and through him a contact was made and a midweek fixture was arranged. It was ( so as it didn’t fall foul of FA regs ) an open door match with spectators making a donation. The monies were shared between some of our players who were in fact having a joint testimonial( maybe John Coleman, Ian Cain, Robbie Armstrong and Gary Dullaghan, but will check) with 50% going to the Jupan players as they didn’t have a lot of money for their trip

I understand the decision not to sound the siren yesterday but I like it just before the players emerge from the tunnel for the game. It helps build the excitement just as the Romeo and Juliet classical music piece a few years ago heralded the players coming out for the game- Sunderland also used the same tune at the time.

hmmm maybe we should keep politics out if Football.

two sides to a story.

if i was an ordinary Russian i wouldn't people next door to me potentially pointing Nuclear Missiles at me? (Cuban Missile crisis anyone) ?

and also if i was an ordinary Russian would be thinking who the hell do the Yanks think they are to tell us about throwing our military weight about?

also story's about Russians living in the Ukraine being discriminated against?

also Politically the Ukraine have had corruption problems and use hitmen to take out political enemy's, just like Russia?

Spot on Andy. Politics has taken over football these days, i'm not sure why the humble football fan is continually expected to be the one making all the gestures. A football game used to be an escape from the real world.

Liz Truss on Marcus Rashford campaigning to feed children...
"footballers should keep out of politics".

Liz Truss on the European Cup final in Russia...
English teams should "boycott it".

Come on Liz, are footballers in or out of politics?

I agree that football shouldn't be making political statements. That said, if MarkS played this, it is a pretty rousing pre-match tune!

MP's and organisations use football to target the unwashed and uneducated. It is wrong to keep using the sport as a tool to force agendas on the working class. I'm pretty sure that they don't harrass the more upper class sports as they do with football.

Andy, just to clear up an apparent misunderstanding in your post, Ukraine gave up their nuclear weapons in 1994 in an agreement whereby NATO promised to come to their defence if they were ever threatened with invasion.

Also, in terms of the Russian people, there are mass protests throughout Russia against Putin's actions, so they would not appear to be in favour on this war.

Bloody hell, we're in agreement!

I will not watch a solitary game from this farce, even if England reach the final. If anyone thought FIFA couldn't sink any further in to a pile of cash & brown envelopes, this is proof that they could.

to my understanding it was around the time the cold war as we knew it back then was coming to an end and disputed ex Soviet states were given the chance by Russia for independence aslong as they surrendered their nuclear arsenal and lived in peace, but since have been wanting to join the EU and Nato, thats not living in peace like originally agreed with the Ukraine.

i'm just looking at this from both sides.

NATO isn't a warmongering organisation; its intentions are for mutual security as I understand it. There is even more to it. In 1991 Bush Snr and NATO promised Gorbachev there would be no eastward expansion, although Gorbachev's interpreter insists that was only in respect of East Germany, but clearly Putin feels aggrieved over that. However, if you look at it from Russia's immediate neighbours' points of view, with such an aggressive Russian president, wouldn't you want the added security of being in NATO? It's not necessarily NATO being expansionist, but equally or perhaps more importantly it's Putin being aggressive that's led to NATO expanding East. Also, on your points about Ukraine, I am aware of political opposition being suppressed, particularly a close ally of Putin who leads (or led) the principle pro-Russia opposition party.

Russia has today declared that anyone not toeing the party line with respect to the war in Ukraine will be liable to 15 years in prison. That's a Russian prison by the way where 15 years would finish off all but the hardiest of souls. So no speaking out, no protests, etc' etc'. They sure know how to crush any hint of democracy. :?
