Wheelchair Accessible Taxis?

Wheelchair Accessible Taxis?

Postby Keith » Wed Apr 27, 2022 12:04 pm

My dad is now in a nursing home in Morecambe and following a stroke, he is now a wheelchair user.

I was hoping to get him to the football on Saturday, which will be his only game of the season, but transport is proving to be a challenge.

Coastal Taxis have got drivers with wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAV's) but said that because their drivers are self-employed, they can't guarantee they will be working, so can't be booked in advance. They suggested phoning on the day to see if one is available. I can see problems with that. Firstly, him being ready to go, but no vehicle, or, he gets to the ground, but no-one available to get him home after the game. Neither scenario is a good one.

Anyone know of a WAV taxi in the Morecambe area who would take a booking for Saturday?

I've not told my dad, in case it doesn't come off.

As another option, if there is someone who has a WAV, and would be willing to pick him up, they could have the 'carer' ticket and go with him to watch the game. I was going to get my mum, who would be willing to go, but football isn't really her thing, so I'm sure she wouldn't mind not going.

This data is from 2019, so not sure how accurate it is, but maybe it will help. Looks like they have several listed as pre-book only.

Thanks Andy (and to the people who contacted me directly), we're sorted now.

I did actually use that Council list. Two of the owners of WAV taxis were very helpful and friendly, but one of them is going to be on holiday in Croatia by Saturday.

The other one couldn't do the job 'cause he's going to some football match with his mates and having a few beers... Can't think where he's on about?

Anyone who knows my dad, he'll be in the wheelchair stand, behind the goal, on the left as you look at the pitch. He'll be made up if people he recognises came and said 'hello'.

Remember your Dad Keith from when we lived further up Lancaster Road from you many years ago. No chance he'll recognise me about 30 years on but I will definitely say hello and give him the time of day when I see him at the game. Really good of you to go the extra mile and get him there. Will no doubt make his year!

He's really looking forward to it. What a game for his first League One match of the season! Hopefully it will go well and he'll enjoy it.

Remember you from there, all a very long time ago. I'll hopefully see him tomorrow.
