Final Assessment

Final Assessment

Ok folks. Assess the season in as few or as many words as you like :P

For me, it's pretty much a reversal of the previous season in that this time we began appallingly and ended well (other than today). We've finished in the same place with 3 more points and a slightly better goal difference (although thanks to today it is still a negative one). Off the field the club has progressed a lot with a new stadium now in the early stages of construction. We've learned harsh lessons with a transfer embargo which, in my opinion, is the major reason we had such a good second half of the season.

Shrimper has stated a number of times that you have to improve just to stand still and I agree. If the four Sammy wishes to get this summer turn out to be four crackers then we might be able to have a more realistic stab at a play-off position. However, his record last summer wasn't really fantastic (only Howe and Roche were season-long successes) so I'm not holding out much hope. If I was to make a very early prediction, I'd go for a third successive 11th place next season.

Do a calculation of the leage IF both Darlo and Rotherham HADN'T had points deducted and we'd be in 13th.......

Still a good effort considering all the problems since the turn of the year.

We'd actually be in 14th. Bournemouth would be above us on goal difference.

Surpassed expectations yet again.

As Marky says, a reversal of last season - started badly but a fantastic second half. Its amazing how tight this league is. On paper, our squad is not the strongest but we have gone from one end of the table to the other simply because of how our team has gelled. There are still improvements we need to make - mainly in the final third. Many of our goals have come from set pieces and we seem to struggle to score from open play. I think we need more pace up front next season.

But overall, we've done very well and the team can be proud of their achievements this season. As for 09/10, its going to be tough. No points deductions to keep us safe and our already small budget will be cut I think. Still, its unlikely that we'll have another transfer embargo and another injury crisis like we had this season so I'm going to predict that we'll finish...

13th

But for now, well done MFC! 8-)
