If The Queen Dies...

If The Queen Dies...

Well, she's not immortal, so 'when' the queen dies...

But if she dies today or tomorrow, or even, has already died, I bet the football is cancelled this weekend. In fact, if it becomes a 'ten days of mourning' we could lose our two biggest games of the season until the winter months.

Was just going to say.... If she does leave us before Saturday. All sporting events will be cancelled for so long?

Everything will be cancelled now which is understandable

Some of the comments on facebook and Twitter are appalling and am totally disgusted by the scumbags writing it

Then football should stop until the war in Yemen/Sudan/Ethiopia/Ukraine end? A six-year-old child in one of those countries dying, should surely be more 'important' than a 96-year-old woman?

It is sad for her family & friends, and some individuals who are devoutly royalist, but I hate this enforced mourning. Have a two-minute silence before the game, and individuals, if they don't want to attend, can choose to stay away.

No matter who you are...or your social standing...the world continues on its journey....but everyone must be given the chance to pay their respects if they so wish...

If that means a suspension of sporting events or a two minutes silencec at sporting events so be it. But I have to admit I do prefer that latter...

We should just wait and see.....I'm a royalist, but personally I'd be disappointed if the mourning of Queen Elizabeth meant that football was cancelled this Saturday. I'm not too sure that I'd like to see two minutes silence though, too many idiots who may enjoy hijacking it, and that could have the potential to turn things ugly.

I will respect whatever happens

I agree with others I would like to see a 2 minute silence but also agree there might be a few idiots who might not respect this

Facebook is full of them already I'm afraid

The Queen was a sports fan! She loved her horse racing and was a regular attendee at many major meetings over the years to watch her many horses run.

I would guess that if she could be consulted she wouldn't want a massive fuss and would be happy to see folk attend the many sports events planned to take place this weekend. Cancelling them will cause massive disruption and financial loss. Why?

When her state funeral does take place it is a different matter entirely. Cancel everything as a matter of respect without a doubt.

Hopefully common sense prevails!

I agree with that ...

Sorry but I'm in total shock

I'm 51 yrs old and have known 1 person rule this country

Don't think it will ever happen again ... I'm not a royalist but it's still devastating news

I agree with this. I'm not an ardent royal fan but the Queen has had a very difficult rule and has always carried out her duties in a dignified and wise way even when other royals were letting the monarchy down.

To me it is far from a case of just 'a 96 year old woman' dying' she has been part of our history. Our history has played an important role in what Britain is today and who we are.

I've lived here a while now to understand most things about this country, but I have noticed that a lot of people seem to dislike the monarchy here, we absolutely adore our monarchy and if this was our Queen we would be beyond devastated. What am I missing about the UK monarchy that people seem not to like? Sorry if that's a really broad question!

About as broad as it get's and a very strange comment! Just what are you basing your opinions on?

Where are you from by the way and why a Morecambe fan based in Bristol?

Please feel free to explain!

I will explain freely... I was actually just asking g because I have seen some very strange comments about the Queen and the monarchy that I don't understand. I don't think I actually voiced an opinion? I just asked why this is the case? I am from Denmark and as I say, we absolutely love our monarchy. I used to live in Heysham when I was younger, I live in Bristol now as my work is based here and I travel from here. Is this okay? Can I still support Morecambe?

Course you can pal! Only asking. Denmark is a lovely country. My family visited there in May this year and I've got to say it was a beautiful, clean friendly country. A little bit expensive, but we enjoyed our stay.

I think we have more respect for our Queen than you may realise. Some of the other Royals may have lost our respect for a variety of reasons, but the Queen never!

Sorry! I'm not very good at reading tones haha. Glad you enjoyed it, I miss it, maybe I'll be sent there for work one day (fingers crossed) okay, that's good! Perhaps what I'm seeing is the minority then, most of them are Liverpool fans, I don't know if there's a connection?!?

I would like to think the majority of British subjects respect the Queen and what she's done for our country. We may not all be Royalists but I would like to think our respect for her transcends this.

As for your observation about Liverpool then I guess you could say the same about roughly one half of Glasgow and Belfast. I would like to think the sentiments in Liverpool are on a far smaller scale than these areas though. Their beliefs are steeped in history and will probably never change.

Apparently the EFL and Premier League are going to make an announcement in the morning

Test Match already cancelled tomorrow along with all horse racing and some rugby matches

Can someone tell me what the difference is between sporting events and theme parks / cinemas etc

Will Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Alton Towers close for a few days I very much doubt it

But surely, you expected a 96-year-old to die before you did? She's been increasingly frail for some time. To me, I was more shocked that she lived this long after Philip's death. I certainly hoped that both you and I would out live her.

It is sad for her family and friends, and for the royalists who worshipped her, but surely, not unexpected?

I'm not a royalist, I don't like any position that is given on the basis of birth, including hereditary peerages. I respect the work that she did and from an historical position, she is an incredible figure.

But, I don't think we're the same nation as we were when she came to the throne, and people should choose if they want to mourn for ten days, or 'get on with life'.

I don't think the games were cancelled when Prince Phillip died last year.

I remember Princess Dianna died on a Sunday and the funeral was the following Saturday. All the Saturday games were cancelled I think but played the next day on the Sunday. I remember that Morecambe were away at Stevenage and won 3-0.

It's a mixture of things, with many differing reasons. There are hard-core Republicans who are fundamentally opposed to a system of unaccountable, hereditary power. Then, there are people who dislike the extent of the royal family and the size of the public purse. In addition, there are people who object to the obscene wealth, hoarded by the royal family.

Personally, I am ambivalent towards them. I respect what the Queen did and her determination to carry out, what she saw as her duty. I am not a royalist, but I prefer a monarchy to an alternative, presidential system. I don't look at the USA or France and believe their political system is better. In the US case, quite the opposite, I see a system that frequently becomes 'lame duck', yet also, as we saw with Trump, excessive power. The Supreme Court are no more elected or accountable than our royal family, yet are in a position to destroy people's lives based upon their religious beliefs. A royal head of state is far preferable. But, other than this being a day of history, my life will not face any changes whatsoever with the Queen dying. It will be interesting to see how quickly coins & notes with the Queen's head on, are phased out and King Charles' head replace them. But having football postponed will actually be a bigger disruption to my life than anything else, especially as I've already travelled to Morecambe (today) for the next two games.

Back to your question, I'm actually surprised that the vast majority of people appear to be genuinely upset by her dying. People who I didn't expect to be in any way 'pro-monarchy' apparently grief-stricken. I'm actually avoiding posting on Facebook at the moment, other than a couple of 'positive' stories, as I don't want to upset people who I know, and because my views are probably in the minority.
