Referee yesterday

Referee yesterday

Just looked at some stats about the ref yesterday

Last 7 games including yesterday he has dished out 33 yellow cards so no real surprise there was so many bookings yesterday

Also only reffed a handful of efl matches...was out of his depth yesterday and was bullied by the ipswich team from start to finish

The EFL really must be struggling to promote Saturday’s ref onto the league list. He was really poor and seemed unable to distinguish between a foul and a fair challenge. He needs to be quickly demoted and sent back to his local park to learn the rules of the game!

There are no "rules" of football, football has "laws" 8-)

I think you've hit the nail on the head. They simply don't have enough refs, so they are fast-tracking some through. Given the lack of help from the assistant referees*, I wonder how experienced they were? It the ref was so inexperienced, he really needed two good assistants. The off-side that wasn't and the second penalty could both have gone a different way if he had good support.

Sorry Keith but I must be as pedantic as you. You say there are no rules in football just laws of the game. WRONG. If you are offside for instance you have not broken the law you have just broken the offside rule.

Every Monday morning on Sky Sports they have Dermot Gallacher (retired Premier League Ref) in the studio to review and pass judgement on contentious decisions from the weekends matches.

Its mainly Premier League obviously but they did look at 2 incidents in League 1. Unfortunately neither was from our game , one was the Accrington game where 2 players were sent off for fouling each other and the other was Lincoln City's game. What a pity nobody referred him to the "offside" goal and the 2nd penalty.

Blimey, more to offside than I realised! Another match ruined by inept or biased officials. A very questionable penalty decision after Bedeau cleanly got the ball and the Ipswich player dived. Connoly's goal was not offside and should have stood, and also Cole Stockton should not have been flagged offside after he came back on-side two passes before the ball was played to him in the 16th minute. I thought this at the time watching from the Bartercard stand, and the replay confirms this. I didn't however know a player is now not offside directly from a goal kick or a corner - I'm sure more can be made of this!

I don’t think the part of the law regarding not offside from a goal kick or corners has changed for years. When we were down to ten men at Accy, Connor’s goal kicks were bouncing in the opposition D and then carrying through to the keeper. Phillips or Stockton could have stood in the D waiting for it but chose to hold the line 15 yards further back with the Accy back 4. So the keeper just had an easy catch. When the back 4 were put under pressure, they shoved a back pass in their own net! A chance missed.

I discovered the goal kick rule first time I saw Jason Price playing against us. He was always at least 5 yards behind our defence at every goal kick, so I looked it up.

I wonder why we don't use this, with Connolly being a nippy player? Leave him a good few yards 'off side' and. the defence will drop back rather than risk him getting a ball to chase, which allows everyone else to push up.
