I thought that a decision on Government funding was going to be announced before Christmas.... :?: :?: :?:

Maybe they don't want to announce any more bad news so soon to the season of goodwill....whilst Blackpool have been awarded more money recently.

Decision now by 31st January as the fund is being increased. That is per the Morecambe Bay Independents Twitter feed.

I don't think Blackpool's money was from the Levelling Up Fund.

Can't see this a good thing, if we were going to get money why delay the decision?
Unless we weren't going to get any money, of course,
but now we may? that would then be a good thing!! :? :D

The government have obviously delayed things like this being announced during its battle with the nurses etc.

They can't plead poverty whilst announcing the buying of luxuries like a new greenhouse.

I binned off 3 emails to Rt. Hon. Michael Gove MP...the Levelling Up chappy...as much use a chocolate fireguard...

So I sent one to yours and mine :) favourite MP, David Morris...he replied back within two days...

"Firstly while I can understand that it is disappointing we face a slightly longer wait than initially hoped, it is not bad news for the Eden Project North funding.

The reason the announcement has been delayed is because the Department of Levelling Up Housing and Communities have had further money allocated to the fund. The fund originally had 1.7 billion and it has been increased to 2.1 billion. The extra time is to reassess all of the applications and to award more funding to projects all across the UK.

The Eden Project in Morecambe is only one of a number of projects that have made bids to the levelling Up Round 2 Fund, and all projects have bid for differing amounts according to the criteria of their project. I am still confident that funding will be secured when the fund is announced by the end of January.

Yours sincerely

David Morris MP for Morecambe and Lunesdale"

Make of that what you will...

To be fair to David Morris, he has been vociferous in his support for the Eden Project. And I'm sure the Tories will want to allocate funds to marginal Tory seats, to give them some hope of holding them, so fingers crossed...

If it gets built how will they staff it???

Pubs, clubs and hotels locally and in the lakes are closing down left right and centre as they cant get people to work in them.

Hospitality generally all over the uk have huge staffing shortages , caused by BEGSHIT.

The pubs and clubs that are closing is due to the price of drinking in them when the punters can drink much cheaper at home. The ones that are prospering are the places that put on decent food at reasonable prices.

Nothing to do with staff shortages or Brexit.

Aww, bless. A Brexit supporter who still avoids evidence and prefers to sing 'Rule Britannia' than actual facts & figures.

According to the Office of National Statistics, quite a few European countries "got through" the pandemic far better than the UK. Late lockdowns, going against scientific advice, "eat out to help out" and, worst of all, discharging COVID-19 positive patients in to care homes all contributed to the UK NOT getting through it "well". The ONLY thing the Johnson government got right, was a swifter vaccine roll out. Otherwise they were a shambles. And that's according to their own ONS figures.

A lot of the hospitality staffing issues are very low wages, unsocial hours, random/short shifts, no guaranteed hours, etc.

Eden Project will be semi-permanent jobs, mostly "normal" daytime hours, etc.

Completely different market.

Not only that, but labour objected to very little that the Government proposed and did.

.....and yet illegals still risk their lives in record numbers by crossing the English Channel by flimsy boat. Why do they continue to risk their lives crossing the Channel if the UK is such a bad place?

So the labour shortage in the UK is caused by pubs being too expensive ?

If you care to google Eden project staff, you will find that most of the 300 or so jobs in Cornwall are minimum wage with compulsory unsociable hours , and a very much "them and us" culture between staff and management ....just for clarity.

The National Living Wages is rising to £10-42p per hour in April and will be higher by the time they have built it.

How much per hour would you be paying if it was your business ?

Exactly.

Keep thinking the problem is refugees, fleeing war & persecution rather than Baroness Moan taking £100 million from her Tory mates, for PPE that was so poor quality that it couldn't be used. Or that despite their record profits, BP & Shell pay almost no tax in the UK. Or that the billionaire Viscount Rothermere doesn't pay UK tax, because despite living there, is 'non-domiciled'. Or that his Daily Mail group don't pay taxes in the UK either, because they are a Bermudian company for tax purposes.

If I was an English speaking refugee from [say] Yemen, fleeing the British made bombs, that the Saudi regime were dropping on my home, I may become desperate enough to get in a rubber dingy, in order to cross the Channel. Isn't it a shame (or shameful) that Britain doesn't allow a safe way to claim asylum in the country?

Since when has entering the UK across the English Channel in a flimsy boat been anything other than 'illegal'?

You make the travel aspect sound so simple. How many 'safe' land borders did these people have to cross in order to plonk themselves on the French shores of the English Channel in order to undertake a perilous crossing by flimsy boat? They shouldn't need to make that crossing. Some may be English speaking, but so what, they are REFUGEES. There is absolutely no need for any of them to cross several perfectly safe countries in order to put their lives at risk by cross the busiest sea-lanes in the world.

They leave war torn Albania to get to war torn France where they pay £ thousands to get in a rubber dinghy to cross the channel and en-route they dump their mobiles and passports in the sea. Always young men , no sign of females with them for some reason. If all is legal and above board surely the Eurostar would be cheaper and safer and they could apply for asylum on arrival.

Illegal immigration is the migration of people into a country in violation of the immigration laws of that country or the continued residence without the legal right to live in that country. Illegal immigration tends to be financially upward, from poorer to richer countries.

Sums it up. If you’re fleeing war or persecution apply for asylum in the 1st safe country you reach. Obviously difficult for some to understand, or just use it for their political agenda.

There's one major reason why they come here rather than applying for asylum in other countries en route: ID cards. Most of the countries they pass through have ID cards which make it much harder, due to the way they are used in everyday life, for a black labour market to operate. It's dead easy here. As for Albanians, they're not fleeing war, they're young men and boys attracted by internet videos of Albanian gangs in England showing off their wealth.
