18 clubs now playing non league football....

Postby BHmfc » Sat Apr 01, 2023 8:11 pm

There are now 18 clubs playing non league football who Morecambe have played against, in the league, since we became a football league club. I think some supporters need to reign in their expectations about playing in league one. We have a small fan base, no money, do not own a training facility and our ground is certainly not league one standard. Added to that, the majority of the squad is made up of loan players, players on short term contracts until the end of the season and players left over from Robinson's very expensive six months in charge (Robinson, the manager who came in on a 3 year deal, promised the earth, brought loads of players in on two year contracts and then headed north) Now some, but not all, are calling for Adams to go, but we need to get realistic, we could get a premier league manager in but with a tiny budget, or no budget at all, would they do any better (Gomez wanted to come back to the club on loan this season but we could not afford his wages so he went to Fleetwood and we know what happened next) It's not just about the manager, you have to look at the bigger picture and the point I'm making about the 18 ex league clubs is that they made managerial changes, some made several managerial changes and now look where they are playing ?

Had Gomez come back to the club I suspect we wouldn't be in the position we are now. Just my opinion..

You're probably right but he didn't and we are.

I agree with most of what you are saying, and remaining in League One was always going to be a difficult task. My frustration is not simply that we look like we're going down, but the manner. I don't think we've played to our strengths, in particular the recent run of 'must win games', where we failed to win any of them. Yesterday, we finally went back to two up front and getting balls in to the area, and had in doing so, created more decent opportunities against a good Barnsley side, than we did against poor Milton Keynes.

We're not good enough to compete against the sides at the top of the table, and we didn't compete in the games against the teams around us.

So how did that work out then?

We took 4 points off FGR
1 off Cambridge
3 off Stanley
2 off Oxford
3 off Cheltenham
4 off Burton
Only MK Don's we didn't take points off.
To say we didn't compete with teams around us is silly.

"Silly" but true!

If you take a 'min-league' of the bottom six:

MK Dons_____Played 10 Points 23
Accrington___Played 9 Points 12
Cambridge___Played 8 Points 10
Morecambe__Played 10 Points 10
Oxford______Played 9 Points 9
Forest Green_Played 8 Points 8

Milton Keynes have taken more than half their points all season, from the five teams below them, which is why they will almost certainly survive. In our recent 'must win' games, we didn't win, which is why we will most likely go down. It is conceivable that we could finish bottom of this mini-league (if FGR beat Cambridge, then lose or draw with Oxford).

If we'd taken six point more from the five 'relegation candidates' teams around us, we'd probably have survived. Oxford [H], FGR [H], Cambridge [A] win instead of draw, and we'd be in a good position to avoid relegation.

In those three games, we had a total of ten shots on target.

The only crumb of comfort is, we have taken points off 'mid-table' sides, so perhaps Lincoln & Exeter etc, may be better opportunities for us?

* I think that mini-league is accurate, I had to work it out manually!

I still have a little hope we can beat the drop.

Lets say we nick a win out of one of the next three games. Then we go into the last three against mid table teams. Sure we might then need to win all three but perhaps two wins out of three might just do it.

Stay positive. We survived last season on 42 points. We will probably need more but perhaps maybe not too many more.

Having fewer games to play may also work in our favour. We will have more time to prepare and playing two games in a week (and potentially losing both) might take it out of our rivals.

COYS!

Your last point, I mentioned to someone yesterday. The later those games are played, playing Sat Tues May just take it out of their players.

Former EFL clubs that could soon be relegated to the level below current National League include Torquay, Yeovil, Scunthorpe and Aldershot.

Just hope we don't go the same way in seasons to come.

Scunthorpe definitely down to National League North and Yeovil a hairs breadth of dropping to South.

Scary to think that both clubs were playing Championship football very, very recently.

Scunthorpe especially is an amazing downfall.

We lost one of our best players (Thommo) to them in 2008 and they were in the Championship.

It's definitely on a par with Yeovil's as well.

I remember Scunthorpe visiting The Globe at the end of the 2013/14 season and they celebrated winning the League 2 Championship that day.

I remember Yeovil winning 5-1 at Christie and that would have given some of the Anti Derek people something to think about. We were just played off the park !

Another former Championship club that fell from grace were Hereford. They got to the Championship on the back of loan players and then went into a tailspin. They are making their way back up the pyramid now.
