Derek's Radio Lanc's interview

Derek's Radio Lanc's interview

Postby Gone_Shrimping » Thu Apr 13, 2023 6:38 pm

I don't know if an anorak can put a link on for Derek's interview to Radio Lanc's today.

About 10 minutes and extremely depressing. Derek says he is boiling inside with anger at some things off the field.

If anyone still thinks we could recruit a manager in the event of Derek leaving they are living in Cloud Cuckoo Land.

Radio Lanc's tried to speak to both Bond Group and Sarjbot today but nobody was talking.

Very worrying !

Call me thick but I don’t quite get what it is that he’s ‘raging’ about and why he feels let down (aside from maybe the single incidence of late payment of wages)…

Ultimately the club is up for sale and we’re going through the process. It’s taking a bit longer than we thought and might be stressful but how does that make him feel let down, and let down by whom? He’s got a tough job in terms of no budget but he knew that when he took the role.

There must just be a lot that’s happened behind the scenes that we don’t know about?

Maybe he was promised a league 1 budget with a league 1 training ground but he hasn't been given anything.

I think his anger was there before the late payment of wages and he has spoken of being 'let down' before.

His player budget has been reduced and he hasn't been given the budget he was promised when he took the role. And yes, a lot has happened behind the scenes that hasn't yet been made public.

A depressing interview.

"Do you feel let down?"
"I have definitely been let down, and the people above me have told me that. They've spoken to me face to face and told me I've been let down."

The only "people above" Derek, are the board, so board members have said 'they' have let him down?

Unless something changes quickly in terms of ownership, I'd be amazed if Derek signed a new contract, even if one was offered to him. The ownership of the club needs sorting, and the pawnbrokers need to be gone.

The owners stand above the Board. So, the owners have let both the Board and Manager down. The Board have both hands tied behind their backs just as much as Derek has his tied.

I wonder if he thought he had some budget to play with in January and then it got taken away.

What I meant was, Derek is only answerable to the board. Ordinarily, the owners would be on the board, but in our case, they are not allowed to be. I agree, the owners are the problem.

Derek did say in that interview he refers to(ranting) a few months back (the previous manager had been backed and he hadn't been backed) assuming with money being promised.

I like Derek and feel all season we've only been a couple of players away from being a good L1 team.

I agree, I don't think the squad, in general, has been that far off mid table L1 standard, but due to financial constraints, we've suffered in two areas. One being having such a young team (isn't our average age one of the lowest in the league) and as we all know, youngsters make mistakes and lack experience. Secondly, the longer term injuries - owners who financially back a team when in difficulties would chip in the extra money to bring in replacements, even if it was over and above the budget. In particular, our midfield has been comprised of youngsters this season and as the midfield is the "engine house" of a team, that's caused the obvious lack of service to the attacking players. We've really missed having experienced players such as Wildig, Adam Phillips, Toums, Songo', who know how to control/manage a game.

I remember his rant about ‘not being backed’ financially but my take on the situation was that the playing budget was the same, he just wasn’t able to sign players because the budget was already taken up by Robbos signings. I get that not signing your own players makes things harder but it’s a situation you’ll have at any club who already have players under contract. Plus it was his fault - indirectly - for leaving us in the first place, which resulted in Robbo coming in and signing those players.

Bonus payments to some Robbo signings came out of this seasons playing budget

I think there's more going on behind the scenes than just Derek not getting the transfer budget promised at interview or one missed payrol. I think we will miss this guy when he's gone and worry we are in big trouble next season and beyond. And I am usually very positive

Radio Lancs have followed up their insightful interview with Derek by interviewing everybody's favourite, Patreon charging, Agent mouthpiece Alan Nixon. It is a bit of a car crash really pinning our woes on not "cashing in" on Cole Stockton.

Cole Stockton, its like we just sat around waiting for offers when in hindsight we should of been offering him to clubs in the summer in order to get a replacement.

I get the impression that Nixon had a financial interest in Stockton getting a transfer last August. Maybe Cole's agent gives him a brown envelope for leaking news about Cole being wanted by Fleetwood and Port Vale etc.

It's easy to say we should have let him transfer after scoring 4 or 5 goals all season.

Nixon blocked me on Twitter and I didn't say anything abusive ! I just told him the Cole was a free agent in the Summer of 2021 and that he chose to sign a 2 year contract with us even though other clubs would know he was out of contract.

I agree. Hindsight is a wonderful thing isn't it? Like all the usual suspects saying we should never have sold Lavelle. They wouldn't have been saying we should have sold Cole if we didn't get a decent striker replacement who only scored a handful would they - then they'd be whingeing we should have kept Cole in the assumption he'd have scored 20+ again!

Stockton should have done what Lavelle did - fair enough not signing a new contract, but get your head down and keep performing. Puts the ball in our court, and eventually we got a fair bid for Lavelle.

Instead, his ridiculous tantrum tactics to force through a below value move shifted the focus towards us standing up for ourselves and not being bullied. Ludicrous behaviour, he should be fuming at whoever advised him at the time. Another decent season and he'd have had top League One clubs chucking £4k/£5k a week at him. But now, he's a 'flash in the pan' player at this level who'll probably have to get the begging bowl out at Port Vale or something. He's shot himself in the foot just as much as he's damaged our chances this season.

I've said it before - look at Alfie May! A year older so less 'time on the clock', didn't get the move last summer but got his head down and has absolutely done the business for Cheltenham. He'll have plenty of clubs after him this summer.

100% agree. The difference between Sam, being totally professional, and Stockton sulking is so clear for everyone to see. I wouldn't be surprised if we played against Stockton in League Two next season. If I was a manager of a League One or Two club, I'd be taking his attitude in to account as well as his previous record, one good season, followed by a superb one, but beyond that, nothing special.

Wouldn't surprise me if he was heading to Scotland.
