O/T Southport Hooligans

O/T Southport Hooligans

No idea why this popped up in my Facebook page, especially as it is almost a week old, but Southport put out the following statement:

In order to clarify our position regarding yesterday’s announcement, Leamington FC had had brought to their attention attempts by a minority of Southport fans, via social media, to organise pre-arranged fights between the rival groups of supporters (as has also been the case, we believe, at certain recent home Southport games).

Officials at Leamington FC were quite understandably concerned at the lack of segregation at the Your Co-Op Community Stadium and the difficulties and costs involved in putting segregation in place at such short notice in order to ensure the safety and enjoyment of the vast majority of supporters. Therefore, and following subsequent discussions with ourselves and the Police, the decision was taken to refuse entry to any individual who is the subject of a current stadium ban from either club, which Southport Football Club fully endorses and supports.

We do not condone violence, the threat of violence, or the breaching of the National League’s Ground Regulations in any way and will continue to work closely with all relevant authorities and parties to prevent this being a feature of following Southport Football Club, so as to ensure that fans can attend and watch the games in a safe and enjoyable environment.

It is disappointing to note that the announcement has been met with further vile and abusive messages on social media. We maintain that there is no place in football for violence in any way, shape or form, or for the defamation and abuse that we have unfortunately seen recently on social media. We will continue to work in conjunction with the Police to identify those responsible and ensure they will no longer be welcome at Haig Avenue.

[My emphasis]

Eh? Surely, the point of a stadium ban is that you are banned from stadiums, not that you are only banned from the stadium if there is a threat of violence? Why would that need to be "discussed" with the police?

It's sad to see this is happening at non-league in the first place, but anyone receiving a 'stadium ban', should actually be, err, banned from the stadium. Actually, banned from all stadiums would be good. Didn't they have a system in place where people who were banned had to attend a police station at 3pm Saturday, with ID to prove they were not attending games?

Reminds me of a sticker that was on the toilet wall which adjoined Clarrie's shed at Christie Park:

"YOU HAVE JUST MET THE SOUTHPORT GROG-MONSTERS"

Was stuck on that toilet wall for YEARS ....... !!!!!!

Must be a bit difficult for the home stadium to pick out those away fans that are banned. Maybe they should have the word BANNED tattooed across their forehead.

They could have it tattooed on their knuckles, but it would rub off as they drag them along the floor...

A few Southport stewards attending away games, looking for banned hooligans? If they went to court and were convicted of an offence, then banned as a result, it is a criminal offence to enter a football ground, so I guess they are only referring to bans issued by the club?

I remember seeing fighting with Southport fans at Christie park. Must of.been around 1991. The.north terrace was open then. A group of about 10 thugs from Southport seemed to be looking for trouble. Anyone remember this?

I vaguely remember a game v Southport back in the day when they had a lot riding on the game and we didn't. At the end they were in the school end at Christie and it was packed. They won and at the end came in large numbers over the wall onto the pitch. I was at the other side of the wall with a yellow bib on  I only remember it because the club had asked for volunteer stewards for the game and I thought it was a good idea to offer my services. I was no shrinking violet but got washed away in a tsunami of bodies and from that moment on decided never to be a steward again!

I certainly have more respect for stewards after that. Not an easy job at all.

Can't remember if it was New Year's day. Was in the Northern Premier league or whatever they called it then. Probably only about 500 on.
I do remember a Sothport game in the conference a few years later. New North stand by then. Think it finished 3-3. Segregation was in place by then.
