O/T Microsoft Scam?

O/T Microsoft Scam?

Postby redrobo » Thu Jun 15, 2023 11:11 am

I've received an email from the supposedly Microsoft account team which on the face of the way it appears visually is convincing. However they suggest that there is something unusual about a recent sign in to my account and as a result have blocked access to my inbox. contacts list and calendar and that to regain access I will need to confirm that the activity was mine.

I'm suspicious of such emails and suspect that it is a scam.

Has anybody else received a similar message from Microsoft that they also regard as being a scam... :?: :?: :?:

Numerous times yes, Neil.

Click on the sender of the email and 99.9999999999999% of the time you will see it has come from a well dodgy email address.

Then, simply block the sender.

Don't ever, ever, ever click on any of the links in the email.

Problem is that it has been sent by account-security-noreply@accountprotection.microsoft.com which having just been on the Microsoft Web page suggests that it is valid.

However I'm going to ignore and see if they persist......

Have you been blocked from your inbox, contact list & calendar?

So how did that work out then?

And did the email address you by your name, personally, or did it say (for example) "Dear [email address] ?

Sent to my usual email address but no formal welcome or any mention of me by name in the introduction.

Really appreciate your thoughts on this as it may help others who may receive a similar email.

That's why I'm erring on the side of it being a scam, Neil.

As I'm sure Keith will allude to (being more techy than me) - genuine emails address you by either your first name and/or both your first name and surname.

All the aforementioned, plus scams are usually riddled with spelling errors,
you could try copying the first few words/lines, flip over to google , paste them in there & do a search,
chances are the same email has gone to thousands before!
