President's Cup - 3 March 1992

Postby mulefeatures » Tue Aug 22, 2023 7:07 am

Dear all,

I would be grateful if anyone could pass on anything they recall about this match from 1992. I'm a Marine supporter and made a special trip to Christie Park for this cup match. I only ever made three trips to Christie Park to watch these teams and two of them ended 0-0. This one was the most exciting and I still can't understand how Marine lost 4-3 after being 3-0 up. I remember that during extra time it started to rain and that summed up our best ever chance of winning at that ground. I was living in Runcorn at this time and it was about midnight when I got home.

I'm doing some research into matches I attended around that time and would appreciate anything anyone can recall about this match.

Many thanks in advance!

Incredible night.

Steve Holden (an ex Marine player VERY briefly - if I remember rightly) was the hero.

Roly Howard - the then Marine manager - absolutely HATED coming to Christie Park as he never, ever won here with his Marine side. Not once.

It was indeed an incredible night. It's that long ago I can't remember specific details but it was one of those matches amongst thousands of others which leave a trace in the memory banks. The weather was foul and we were going nowhere when we suddenly clicked into gear and blew Marine away. 0-3 down to 4-3 up. No small achievement because Marine were on a par with us at the time and indeed were probably the better outfit for a few years. You won the NPL but couldn't go up due to stadium issues (your new stand hadn't been built then as I remember). We finished second and took your place due to our superior stadium being suitable for the league above. The rest is history!

It was similar in many respects to other great comebacks over the years such as the Chesterfield 4-3 win and the Crewe 4-2 win. Great memories.

Not sure if it was at that time that Chris 'the bull' Camden was playing for you. What a unit that guy was and must have been a nightmare for defenders. He's about the only player I can remember for you from way back when.

On a slightly different note your recent FA cup run was surreal. Loved watching you take on Spurs at College Road. Superb stuff.

Wasn't Chris Camden known as "The Water Buffalo" ?

Who remembers the (then billed as The Title Decider) home match v Marine in the 1994/95 season in which we won promotion to the Conference.

Match played towards the end of March and a MASSIVE crowd gathered on CP to watch 1st v 2nd grind out a 0-0 draw.

My abiding memory is of the Marine keeper - gobshite Kevin O'Brien - gesturing to the Morecambe fans in the Christie Avenue End at the final whistle.

Well if he was playing that night then Water Buffalo might have been more apt. It absolutely persisted down all evening. In the second half we were attacking the School End which was an open terrace by then. It was virtually empty because everyone had gravitated up into the main stand for some cover.

I seem to remember him as 'The Bull' but that might be just my name for him because he reminded me of a bull with his physique and strength.

Remember it well. Brought two mates over from East Lancs who weren't Morecambe fans but didn't mind coming for the occasional 'big' game. Wasn't the crowd about 1800 ish? Not huge by todays standards but back then it was huge when we normally got a few hundred. It was a fiercely fought 0-0 which served Marine better than us at the time and helped them win the league. Think Kevin O'Brien got more than his fair share of abuse from us due to the goal being right up against the perimeter wall in them days. Probably just returning the favour at the end. Bit like the King last Saturday but less subtle

Many thanks for your recollections! I recall the 0-0 result the season we were champions. Morecambe had a goal disallowed from a corner as the referee had seen a push on someone. On the night we were crowned champions Morecambe played Colwyn Bay and I think there were no goals there either. That left Marine uncatchable at the top. I heard that some Morecambe fans arrived in Colwyn Bay early and had a dink or two at the Marine Hotel in the town before the match.

We couldn't go up because own ground wasn't to the required standard but since then Morecambe have done very well indeed. Perhaps we might meet each other in the FA Cup on some future date.

Always a good trip to Rossett Park. LOVED those days.

Got some photos somewhere of the last day of the 1989/90 season there. We lost 0-2 but it was the Players Fancy Dress Day and the squad turned up to Marine in an assortment of outfits.

Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, Noddy and Big Ears ....... all sorts !!!!

Must try and find them. As I say, great days.

Only been to Rossett Park (I thought it was College Road ! ) once and I remember seeing the late Tommy Smith formerly of Liverpool in the ground. Was he the Marine Manager or was it always Roly Howard who I think was Kenny Dalglishe's window cleaner !

Roly Howard had been Marine manager since 1972 so Tommy Smith won't ever have been.

yes , come to think of it , Tommy Smith was sat in the stand behind the goal. He was walking with the aid of a stick which was a reminder of how injuries can blight footballers lives when they retire. I think he did some coaching but not at Marine.

Great days away at Marine, also remember good trips to other parts of that neck of the woods

Anyone else remember trips to Kirkby Town, Skelmersdale, Ellesmere Port Town and best of all Holly Park home of South Liverpool and their great character keeper Peter Eales

This is something else that I've never forgotten.

Back end of the 1987/88 season at Christie and we're playing South Liverpool at home on Grand National Day. Nothing to play for, Morecambe's title challenge has long since withered away.

I think it was yourself Midds who was on the tannoy that afternoon and announced to the crowd of just 188.... yes, 188 (how the **** do I remember this nonsence) who the winner of the Grand National was (it started earlier in those days.)

Peter Eales - in goal for South that day - turned round to face the then open North Terrace and expleted, "F***ing b@$t@rd" as he had lost his bet.

As I say, I've never forgotten that !!!!!
