Another one of these things that is alright for athletes/bands/football clubs etc but a bit boring when it's just everyday folks who think the rest of us give a s**t whether they enjoyed their lunch or almost missed their flight or whatever.

You have to divide Twitter into two parts - people who want to follow and people want others to follow them or believe what they have to say is worth reading.

For those wanting to follow there are lots of interesting people who've got a lot to say. More below.

However for those doing the 'Tweets' most are utterly awful and done by people with egos the size of planets. My own view (for the record I'm having to advise clients on Twitter every day, sadly) is that the value of posting via a Twitter is limited to the following groups:

Celebrities - but only if they've got something interesting to say because they'll naturally get people to follow

Experts - people at the cutting edge of their profession who can share interesting ideas with their peers

Evangelists - people who believe passionately in a subject, often it can be a bit mad but it makes for real interesting reading if it stays focused.

Beyond them I can't find a use. I've advised our clients wanting to use Twitter to aid their business to think about how much time each day it requires to post and to monitor and then to think about doing it each working day for a full year. If they can't don't bother.

So interesting Twitterers. Try the following (some highly questionable):

It's worth joining twitter for Stephen Fry alone. I've got a twitter account, mainly because I wanted to see what it was all about. I don't often post to it but I follow quite a few accounts from which I get entertainment and news easily picked up on my iPod. In fact most of my posts are auto-generated from a blog and I'll probably drop that soon because it just clutters up an admin screen on the blog.

I'll be adding some of Posh's suggestions though.

Professional - as in paid for it.

There are mugs all over the country from companies going on £500 to a £1,000 a day Twitter courses. I know one company in London who made £75,000 from a two-day multi-session seminar course on the subject. I'm sure those who signed up only learned not to bother.
