You have to divide Twitter into two parts - people who want to follow and people want others to follow them or believe what they have to say is worth reading.
For those wanting to follow there are lots of interesting people who've got a lot to say. More below.
However for those doing the 'Tweets' most are utterly awful and done by people with egos the size of planets. My own view (for the record I'm having to advise clients on Twitter every day, sadly) is that the value of posting via a Twitter is limited to the following groups:
Celebrities - but only if they've got something interesting to say because they'll naturally get people to follow
Experts - people at the cutting edge of their profession who can share interesting ideas with their peers
Evangelists - people who believe passionately in a subject, often it can be a bit mad but it makes for real interesting reading if it stays focused.
Beyond them I can't find a use. I've advised our clients wanting to use Twitter to aid their business to think about how much time each day it requires to post and to monitor and then to think about doing it each working day for a full year. If they can't don't bother.
