Next season

Postby redrobo » Tue Oct 10, 2023 12:07 pm

Although this season is only around a 3rd of the way along the road, I suspect DA is already looking toward next season bearing in mind that the majority of the current squad will be out of contract ( :?: ) which will mean DA having to rebuild once again.

As he mentions in his latest video on the OWS players can only be concerned about their performances for the current season as anything can happen with regards to injuries or not fulfilling their potential.

Until the ownership is sorted i fear that every close season will be the same with DA having to work miracles again to build a squad that can more than simply hold itself in EFL2 or even EFL1.

Have to mention the latest excellent interview by a squad player in this case by Cammy Smith who as other squad players spoke with confidence and professionalism and is another example of how DA respects his players to be able to conduct themselves when being interviewd by the media.

I think when The King mentioned that the new owners would have to buy within 6 months it was this that he had in mind. If no new owner is in place by then the whole squad barring Mayor will be out of contract and have to be released just like happened in June to last seasons players.

I'm not sure that's how it will be.

Last season we dropped out of League 1 with a lot of players on L1 wages.

The ownership was up in the air with possibly no commitment in place from Bond Group.

At the end of last season Derek Adams said he had no budget given and it would be unfair to his players to string them along if it stopped them getting a deal elsewhere. I understand some were told they were still wanted if acceptable funds could be approved.

At the end if this season we'll either have a new owner in place or a pragmatic Bond Group ready to approve an early budget.

Each season prior to last Derek has been able to produce a retained list with a list who had been offered new contracts so last year was the exception.

As I understand the only name, at the moment, on a future retained list is Adam Mayor who still has another 18 months.

I suspect well will be seeing new contracts offered as we move through January. I'm hoping that list will include Joel Senior amongst others

I hope you are right. We need a new owner with funds. It's hard to see us making good enough offers to keep players like JJ , Senior etc with the same ownership in place.

Strangely I assumed JJ McKiernan was on loan with us. He's definitely one we need to keep. He'd make a good L1 player, if we get promoted.

JJ is only 21yrs old, so at least we'd be due compensation if he left.

David Cameron. May 4th 2015.
So how did that work out then?

JJ is a loan player so we wouldn`t get any compensation (He belongs to Watford at the moment)

No he isn't a loan player.

He signed a 1 year contract with us after Watford released him. Look on Watford's OWS.

JJ is under contract, and I would imagine we will be extending it if we have any sense!!

I think what we massively crave is some stability. That means keeping a chunk of players on into next season.

At the very least (based on what we've seen so far) I'd love to see Moore, Love, Senior, Rawson, Bedeau, Tutonda, Songo'o, McKiernan, Mayor still with us next season.

It wouldn't be the worst idea, I'm less fussed about the others like Melbourne, Stokes, Davenport etc but if it helps keep some consistency in the squad then I'd hope we offer contracts to quite a few.

It depends on whether the existing owners confirm the budget soon enough. Last season, Derek had to let all players go because he didn't know if he even had a budget, let alone how much it was. That's pretty unusual, but there must have been an absence of communication/agreement between the board and the owners for that to happen. The Board obviously couldn't commit to re-signing players if they weren't certain they had the money to pay them - otherwise it's wrongful trading which is an offence and it's the directors who'd be in trouble, not the owners!

Presumably, even if there is no change of owners, the current owners and Board won't let that happen again and will be working to avoid it before the end of the season, so that Derek has a budget to work with, and then he won't have to make the nuclear decision to let everyone go!

Alternatively, of course, it could have been a Board decision to force the owners to commit to providing (more) funds - brinkmanship if you prefer.

Whatever happened behind closed doors, we can be sure that Derek and the Board worked together for the benefit of the club - they always have done - and their decisions wouldn't have been taken lightly.

We are in the dark except for what DA has said and that was a wish more than anything. If there is someone about to come up with the money and get rid of the current owners all well and good for goodness sake get it done. It then comes down to money and I hope it will not be the same scenario as last year, having to let basically every player go. Yes thou’s on loan will go back. But let’s offer some of the others another years contract in January and see who we can keep. It’s common sense but we are Morecambe with a ownership that makes no sense. Cross everything you have it gets sorted.
