Playing from the back

Playing from the back

Saturday was a prime example of how to play against a team that uses the playing out from the back yet we didn't have a clue whilst Colchester had mastered the art of restricting us and our inability to change was painful to watch.

During a post match interview of one of the FA Cup games it was suggested that just because the tactic is used in the Premiership for teams at our level a teams inability to carry out such a tactic with the precision of a Premiership team only encourages fans to become restful and demand a change. Such was the clamour by the fans on Saturday but we refused to change despite it blatantly obvious that it was simply not working and was wasting valuable time in which to search for an equalizer.

On this occasion I have to blame our management team for persisting with the tactic which was so clearly not working. Ged is still in the early stages of learning the management game and hopefully he will have learned to change a tactic if it simply isn't working.

They hardly mastered to restrict us playing out from the back all they did was wait for Mair to pass it to Rawson and close him down quickly. It isn't rocket science and neither the management or players either couldn't or didn't change the way we played. School boy stuff and awful to watch. Three points thrown away.

Some Premier league sides struggle to play
out from the back so it boggles my mind that we are trying it! Either kick it straight upfield or pass it to the left or right back to them move it further upfield. The amount of times we got to the half way line and then turned back towards our own goal was so annoying on Saturday. I didn't think the players realised we were actually losing! What ever the plan was on Saturday it didn't work at all but it didn't get changed. We made them look good
Don't worry be happy!

That’s where the problem was, that happened but they got closed down,so it was back to keeper out to the other side, closed down back to keeper and hoof a lot of wasted time, also when we did try to press out from the back our players hardly ever found space to take the ball so back to keeper again
