Not totally unexpected.

Thank you to Gareth for your time as manager and for restoring some pride into the nations team.

What's he re-singing redrobo? Surely not Football's Coming Home. (Might want to correct the title. ;) )

I hope England can get another manager as successful and we don't have to wait 50 years again, as I very much doubt I'll still be around to see it.

If we want an English England manager, which I hope we do, the choices seem very limited. It would be interesting to see Alan Shearer have a go but I think there would be clashes of personalities between him and players and we can't take a risk.

And so the guessing game of who will replace him begins.

Already in the frame are Frank Lampard and Eddie Howe.....

I just hope that they don't go for Frank Lampard.

I hope they don't go for one of the old guard (I've seen Roy Hodgson mentioned  ). I don't mind if they're not English, TBH, just want someone who'll freshen things up.

Listened to Sport News on GB News a reporter said that being a National Team Manager is totally different than being a successful League Manager.

League managers are with the same players day in day out whilst a National Team manager is only with his players occasionally and therefore deciding who will take over does mean it will not necessarily be a successful league manager.

Get Josè in.

Southgate has done a very good job but his unwillingness to go at teams was his downfall.

Jose would have been ideal and think he'd be ruthless at international level. Klopp wants the Germany job for the next world cup and Potter, Lampard and Howe are younger versions of Southgate.

I'd go foreign as there is less emotion. Kane wouldn't have started for example. No emotional ties or pressure from the British people or media. Capello did terribly but he didn't care. Imagine that attitude with success.

I'd like to see Poch but then again he's never won anything either!

Break the bank and ask Pep if he fancies doing it.

Can't spend millions of pounds when managing a national team, can only pick what fits. It's not a given he wouldn't do well without money!

Could somebody pass on Neils regards to Gareth Southgate? I'm not sure if he reads Shrimpsvoices

I think that overall you have to give Southgate credit - he has done a great job, falling just short of winning the big competitions but going much further than any of his predecessors did. He does have a great squad of players to pick from on paper, but so did many others - when you compare the 2004 squad that Sven had with this team, I don't think many current individuals would get in.... but that's the thing about football; it is a team sport and collectively that is what Gareth has built; a solid team that shows more togetherness and effort than we have seen from other more talented generations. The club allegiances have largely gone (possibly because Manchester United are now completely shite and the make-up of the squad is drawn from a wider pool of clubs that aren't as self-interested).

That said, I do think it is time for the team to evolve and move forward under a new manager. Whilst it would be a brave man to drop the likes of Harry Kane and Kyle Walker, both played particularly poorly/didn't suit the formation/tactics Gareth was looking to implement at the Euros - and I think this cost England; who didn't impose themselves as I'm sure they would have liked to throughout the competition despite reaching the final.

I would favour Eddie Howe if he can be persuaded to leave Newcastle, or a good tactical coach such as Graham Potter over a foreign import (unless you can get a Klopp or a Pep, but with both earning big bucks - I think they are out of reach). With Southgate the highest paid coach in the Euros (reputedly £5m per year) - finances would surely rule either of these candidates out. Whoever does get the job, if they go on to finally end Englands long wait for a trophy - it will largely be because of the groundwork achieved by Southgate, not despite it... and because of that he deserves the utmost respect for a job well done.
