New signings

New signings

Postby Wild Bill » Wed Jul 17, 2024 12:07 pm

With so many announced in one go, it was difficult to see what quality players Derek has now signed.

Can anyone offer any insight into who's come in, other than the players resigned from last season?

Do we have reasons now be optimistic and what areas do we still need to strengthen?

Players analysed

But for me we have some good quality (for league 2) players at the back, Edward’s also needs no introduction (our stand out), Slew & Songo also need no introduction, not the best but great squad players but think we will struggle up front where we will always struggle unless we can grab a quality loan

Personally I'm concerned about the central defensive area as well as the strikers.

I hope we are able to bring in a striker on loan and for me we will miss Rawson and to some extent Bedeau who in my opinion will both be big shoes to fill.

DA can only work with what he has got financially but it looks as though we will have the lowest playing budget in EFL2 which will no doubt have it's repercussions in the season to come.

Hopefully the sale issue will be resolved before the close of the current transfer window in August and that our new owners will provide extra funding for DA to attract players with better ratings and backgrounds to some of those already in the building.

I think Hallam Hope will be a good signing. I thought he would be older than 30 as he seems to have been around a while , but I liked his movement and awareness at Longridge. We need another striker though or maybe 2 as goal scoring looks like it could be a problem.

Yes, it sounds like the 2-3 loanees still to come will make the difference between a relegation dogfight and a potentially better season. I am sure Derek will bring in some talent and there may be one or two that will surprise also from the signings.

I guess the thing we need more than anything is fight and leadership. Lets hope there's already some of this in the squad.

I thought Hallam Hope showed glimpses at Longridge making good runs, him and Edwards only played the last 10-15 mins last night so I get the impression he was protecting them a bit and they will be his two main forwards.

Tollit has done ok in both games, his shooting was awful at Longridge but he scored last night.

Everyone else looks much of a muchness at the moment and it's been hard to tell, Lewis the fullback from Liverpool might be ok a bit like a Ryan Cooney attacking fullback.

We deff need some quality loan signings.

People get too hung up on what these Twitter experts have to say nowadays. "Gab, what do you think about so and so" is one of the worst things I read on Twitter. I'm sure Derek and his team have looked in to the players without seeking advice from the likes of Sutton and the others.

Wouldn't worry about our starting CB pair, which is likely to be Ray and Stott. Ray was highly rated at Barrow, is very experienced and thought he looked imperious on Tuesday night. Dominated everything in the air too. A bit early to say with too much certainty, but it's looking like he may well be an upgrade on Rawson. Stott had a great season in the NL with Halifax and was well liked at Stockport in the NL too. Should do well making the step up - Non-League Paper put him in their team of the season.

Adam Lewis joining with Tutonda returning gives us a great options at LB. Millen and Hendrie seemed ok at RB, think they'll do a job and the way Derek's had his FBs competing for a starting spot before may well drive them both on.

I'm pretty happy with our options in central midfield. Songo'o we know all about, although think his minutes need managing. White is a decent energetic defensive player and should do well, and hopefully Callum Jones can impose himself more on games now with a bit more experience under his belt than in his previously loan spell - we know he has a good bit of quality. Paul Lewis was a bit maligned at Tranmere but I think he really suits Derek - physical presence in midfield, gets stuck in defensively and likes to get into the box, all traits Derek likes. Thought he looked solid on Tuesday.

Tollitt was a nice surprise on Tuesday. Didn't look a great signing on paper, but really liked his directness in how he dribbled and passed - always looking forward to find something incisive, qualities which we know Derek values. May well end up being back-up/utility attacking player, but at the very least he's a big upgrade on Cammy Smith in that role. Didn't see much of Hope, but we know he's got a bit of quality even if it has wained in recent years. Jury still a bit out on him - would be a little concerned if he's our starting striker, but he's a good option as back-up I think.

I think there's a solid base to the squad in defence/central midfield which suits how Derek likes to play. We definitely still need a bit more up top though - at the moment the only player I really back to pull something out of a hat is Edwards. As brilliant as he is, we'll need a bit more. I'd imagine it will come from the loan market - hopefully Derek can continue has a strong track record there.

Ray was brilliant for the majority of last year, I think he came out at 4th in some Opta ratings or somesuch for centre backs in L2. In 22/23 he was nowhere near the level of 23/24. If he’d been on a one year contract, most would have got rid but he excelled in year 2.

It’ll be interesting to see how he does in a two, we always played three centre halves.

Another new signing, are we going to get any on loan youngsters? A very big welcome to Harvey.

Fleetwood paid a fee for Harvey and signed him up on a 2 1/2 year deal, his 1st pro contract. He impressed Scott Brown, played regularly and was given an extended contract to 2025 but has since fallen out of favour whilst also playing the last few months in Ireland on loan. Derek has gone in, agreed a contract termination to allow him to sign with us but they will get a fee if we end up selling him at any point so a good deal all round even though FTFC have mistakenly stated we paid a fee

Welcome Harvey but it's, strikers we need. Let's hope something will happen in the near future when Championship clubs look to send their promising players out on loan.

Oh dear, seems like Gab's quite a fan of our new signing Harvey Macadam!

Should we be concerned given his endorsement, or do you think Derek and his team might have consulted Gab on this one?

I like that Gab. Generally seems pretty clued up and always (correctly) rates us better than most.

Macadam was clearly good enough to make a decent amount of starts in league one and based on his stats, he should be of a high enough quality for league two. Including the sell on clause also hints that Fleetwood have some concern that he would kick on and ultimately leave us for a fee.

I always think he's just some lad in his bedroom doing a few podcasts.

However he does seem to watch a lot of league 1 & 2 football and doesn't write us off like others do.
