What is the biggest giant kill Morecambe have achieved?

Postby ezz » Tue May 26, 2009 3:41 pm

PNE?
Wolves?
Considering what league we were in at the time and what league the team we beat were in, who have we beaten that had the biggest gap between the two clubs at the time?
As I've only been watching Morecambe for about 15years there may be some earlier wins that may eclipse more recent ones.
PNE & Wolves were 2 leagues higher than us at the time, are there any of famous wins for morecambe that defy even greater odds than those?
Get over it ;)

were they? Thought they were in what is now league two?

Chesterfield were at league one level when we beat them.

Both Preston and Wolves are equally impressive names on the CV. I'd edge for Preston though, quite a large and local club. Still gutted I had to miss that game.

For me it has to be Cambridge at home who at the time were flying in division 2 (lg1), and we were struggling in the mid-reaches of the conference, even today i doubt one of that squad could argue with that being their biggest highlight.

What division were Chester in when we won there in the 60's?

Wolves without a doubt. One of the best supported teams in the land with Premiership history and in a two-goal win in their own back yard. Thats going to take some beating!

Wolves.

But not that game, although for me that's the biggest competitive win, but the 6-1 win in a pre-season friendly.

OK it was a pre-season friendly but bear in mind they sent up their entire first team squad bar injuries, were a Premiership team, played a former England captain and a former Russian captain, and then factor in the reaction of their fans and local media. It was a hell of a win.

P.S. 9-2 on aggregate.

P.P.S. Beating Chesterfield was a bigger win than Cambridge. Chesterfield were as high as Cambridge were in League 1 and we beat them at their ground.

I was just about to type virtually the same. We had been Conference Runners up the season before and they presented us with The Bob Lord Trophy just before the match. Wolves had just been promoted to The Premiership and they lined up clapping but in a ruffle your hair, pinch your cheek kind of way. We then absoloutely mullered them.

I remember their local reporter getting a call from his office. It went something like this...

( I can only imagine the office side of the conversation, but it was obvious and you can fill in your own blanks)

Reporter: Hello

Office:

Reporter : 4 - 1

Office:

Reporter : No

Office:

Reporter : No, I am not

Office:

Reporter: I swear. We are just dreadful.

Office:

Reporter: I will try, but I dont hold much hope of him wanting to talk about it.

Office:

Reporter: Will do, but I cant see it changing

Posh is correct though, Chesterfield meant so much at the time. It is still my second favourite victory after Wembley. I would say that, in terms of acheivement is the best.

Chesterfield for me.

We were still non-league then - and it was at their place (thus beating the Cambridge experience).

The PNE and Wolves games were great but we'd had a few bigger 'occasions' already by then so, though we celebrated wildly, it didn't seem quite the same massive feat.
Is the glass half full or half empty? Mmmm? hard to say - but it does look like there's room for more beer!

I thought the PNE game was fantastic with the atmosphere and amount of away fans there. For me the atmosphere was the nearest thing we will ever get to Wembley.
