Law 12.2

Law 12.2

Law 12.2:

An indirect free kick is awarded if a goalkeeper, inside their penalty area, commits any of the following offences:

controls the ball with the hand/arm for more than six seconds before releasing it

Newport's keeper regularly held the ball for twelve or more seconds. Eventually, he gets booked for time wasting before a goal-kick. The ref clearly spotted the time wasting but chose not to implement Law 12.2, which would have resulted in an indirect free-kick in their penalty area.

I can't remember when I last saw this Law used.

Newport sussed the officials out early and played them well. After the gift of a goal they stopped trying to play and dicked about time wasting for the next however long. The Ref was very weak and lost control of the game early on and made some dodgy calls because of that.

To be fair on refs generally, the interpretation is, if both players are grabbing/pulling shirts etc, then there is "not usually an offence".

Newcastle versus Bolton, Jaaskelainen held the ball for 5.6 seconds Alan Shearer jumped about like the knob he is and the ref gave a free-kick from which they scored it.
Match of the Day ran a stop watch on it, not even an apology.

Just saying.

That was probably the last time it was used!

As for Newcastle cheating, they always do...

David Elleray or something similar, in Shearers back pocket most of his career.

I'd assumed that Law 12.2 must've been done away with, the length of time some keepers hang onto the ball these days.
As for Newcastle cheating, and the way they get away with it, even after VAR reviews. That led to some very harsh words being directed towards the television in our house last season.
