I think the biggest mistake was letting O'Carroll go. He wasn't given a fair chance but when he did play he always did well for us.

I think Sammy will be proved right as he was with Jon Newby who turned out to be a poor player who did a decent job for us as a "super sub" but was never anything better than that, as is the case with O'Carroll.

Wonder where we would have been without Newby's goals?

Exactly. You can't argue with the fact that in terms of goals:appearences, he was one of the best strikers we've had recently.

Maybe we'd have signed someone who'd score more; maybe we'd have been relegated. Who cares?

More or less the same position we were. Of his 6 league goals three of them came in the same game against a Rotherham side who had given up due to not being paid any money.

I honestly don't see where this idea that Newby was some under used football genius comes from. He's only scored 41 goals in his entire career.

I am gld you wrote that. Exactly what I was thinking. Take away the three against a very poor Rotherham and that leaves three. Not exactly a fantastic return. I always thought he was a yard slow and a bit lightweight.

He wasn't great but he was the best striker at the club - although thats saying more about the rest of the strikeforce.

Twiss was a more technically gifted player but Newby was the better goalscorer.
