Just for starters, who remembers these ??!!

Kenneth Gardners Records and Tapes shop in the Arndale !

DMC Records and Tapes on Euston Road AND on Yorkshire Street !

Preedy's Newsagents (between where Samuels was and the Marsden Building Society now is)

By Happy Mount Park, on the grass banking behind the snack bar, some council worker had planted the bulbs in such a way that when they flowered, they spelt out the word "SMILE" ! They came back in growth every year .... for years !!

It did indeed have an upstairs Stewie, yeah.

As did the Co-op on Regent Road !!! (Now the Late Shop). It used to have the BEST toy dept. in the area - BAR NONE back in the 70's. I remember my dad taking my sister and I there every Christmas just for a look around and to see Santa !

Look at it now ..........

The co-op on regent rd had a massive electrical section upstairs I seem to remember going when I was a kid because we bought a TV.

The chap that used to work up there has been working in the dairy section in Morrisons for years strange how you remember certain people.

I seem to remember the coop had food on the main floor, furniture upstairs and a chemist on the side ( where Argos is now)

Racking my brains to what else was in the arndale. I remeber Norweb, Dewhursts and Rumbelows! at the far end , but what was opposite ( where the shoe shop is now)

There was an old Chemist where Greggs now is, and Mackays across the way.

My mum always used to drag me into McKays and I HATED it !!! One of those places where you get a bad feeling !!

A British Gas showroom was in there too somewhere.

Who remembers an Amusement Arcade down Queen Street? I think it was next door to where Pizza Italia now is (as you walk in the direction of the one way system)

Me and a mate spent a few hours in there one evening in April '86 as we waited our lift back to Carnforth after a home night match ! As kids, we were safe down Queen Street in the evenings back in those days !!!

Kenneth Gardners Records and Tapes shop in the Arndale

I used to go KG's every Saturday morning with me dad to get the records for kids club at the Classic , where he was the projectionist. Eric Morecambe would often come up and sit in the circle and watch the old B&W movies , i think he got quite a bit of his material from Groucho. ;)

Kim’s ice-lollies (home-made, conical ones that tasted of Vimto) I used to get them from the Continental Cafe on Sandylands Prom.
Cider flavoured lollies from the Tudor Stores at the junction of Balmoral Road and Fairfield Road.
Spanish Gold chewing ‘tobacco’ (cocoa coated coconut strands) from the kiosk at the Empire Cinema (served by the big-bosomed lady with horn-rimmed specs and a languid Brummy accent).
Penny Arrows, blackjacks, mojos, candy pink shrimps and fruit salad sweets from the Quality Stores near Sandylands School.
Sweet peanuts (sweet, nutty flavoured candy shaped like a monkey nut with actual crushed salted peanuts inside).
Cola cubes.

Jumpers for goalposts etc
Is the glass half full or half empty? Mmmm? hard to say - but it does look like there's room for more beer!
