and when people go on about the Midland hotel, for me the Governor hotel had more history my mother use to work there, and was asked out for a drink off one of the Beatles in 1964 when there were playing at Lancaster university

my claim to fame a 80s pop band called Altered Images the lead singer call Clare Grogan(Gregory's girl) was staying there so a load of us went round after school and waited hours for her to come out for autographs, but i asked her for a kiss and got one on the lips when i was about 13

Lots of cinemas to choose from:

Palace; Arcadian; Empire; Palladium; Royalty; Plaza; Odeon; Gaumont. How the hell did they find all the films?

Cinematic equivalent of Blockbuster? :D

So how did that work out then?

"yes amazing wht you forget over the years isnt it, remember the arcade of good quality shops by the old cinema, i suppose where Morecmbe bowl is now"

Lunns Arcade.

And there were two plays about Morecambe that I remember. The one where the old bloke dies in the toilets (and I recall they used the ladies' toilet - changing the signs round because it suited the camera better to shoot that side.)

There was another about a family going down to the beach

http://www.screenonline.org.uk/tv/id/856215/index.html

and one kid running off to play on the pier. They were on the beach at Sandylands, yet the kid was at the pier within a few seconds.

With that and the other one, the fun for us was shouting: 'how did they get there that quick?' as they walked down one Morecambe street to emerge from another which we knew was miles away!
Is the glass half full or half empty? Mmmm? hard to say - but it does look like there's room for more beer!

I used to go to the Saturday Morning Cinema cub at the Odeon (later the Classic; even later First Stop DIY!)

Just remembered something and I hope someone will back me up here !!

I definitely recall in 1994 going to see a concert on the Promenade (outside the Empire I think it was) during the summer months, and was a couple of hours set by Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra. I tell people I saw him do a gig on Morecambe Prom and get called a blatant liar !!!

What was the occasion for him doing that then ? Anyone recall ??!!

I remember that, think it was down opposite the fairground, with a stage facing along the prom, with its back(so to speak) toward the Battery, but i can't remember why!!

My mum swam the bay,
I've still got my Blue Seagull (felt a plonker going for it, cos i'd done them other bronze, silver, etc, but it was last chance before it shut!)

This is nice, but not very early (in history, i meant, not as in early in the day, ahh, just watch....!!)

So much so, that on a good day, you can't see Barrow ..... !!

You remember well, my memory of that night was Jools introducing his brother on keyboards. Was it something to do with Noel Edmonds/Blobby? I'm sure they closed the promenade along the west end for the temporary stage.

I have this distant memory from around 1993/94 of a stage set up on the promenade side
opposite Frontierland, and Steve Middlesbrough standing on the stage talking to Noel Edmonds.
Then, some months later, the infamous deal between the town council and Unique group was done, and, well, we all know what happened after that.....

Thanks for that Gnasher ! Yes indeed, I too remember Jools introducing his brother, Christopher, who then went on to sing a cover of "I Saw The Light." A few nights later, Jools and his R&B Orchestra played the same set in Edinburgh (I think it was) and it was released commercially for purchase. I still have a copy of that live cd somewhere that I purchased from the late Ear 'Ere Records in Lancaster !

This is from my 'personal collection'
Image
i worked at the Winter Gardens for that last season.
i worked with them all, you know, Cardew Robinson, Monica Rose, Derek Batey, Wayne Fontana, Charlie Williams, the list goes on and on!
A mildly interesting story about this poster - The Dooley family appeared once, then hit the big time and appeared on Top o' the Pops, (check your Guinness hit singles!)changing their name to The Dooleys in the process.
That was the week before they were due to come back,
they cancelled on account of being too famous, vowing to return later, according to their manager,
They never did.
Where are you NOW Dooleys???

Didn't Derek Batey officially open Morecambe Carnival one year ? I know for a fact that Charlie Williams did the honours for Carnforth Carnival because I remember getting his autograph !
